Are the factors that create black skin colour genetically dominant over white skin colour?

A mixed race couple have say 10 children, I'm guessing none of them will have blond hair and blue eyes and none ot them will have white, northern european type skin colour. Thinking of Mendel's original genetic experiments with red and white flowers, would that apply to human beings, that is offspring from a mixed race couple will always be some white and some black but in the same ration. When thinking of white people I mean someone with no other genetic mix in their ancestry if that is possible.

Are the factors that create black skin colour genetically dominant over white skin colour?
The general rule for mixed race children is that they will be darker than the light parent and lighter than the dark parent. The difficulty with the prediction is the purity of the subjects. Because either parent may have mixed ancestry, even generations back, you cannot be sure what genes they're carrying. So you get a much more varied genetic expression. I suppose if you took a scandinavian parent and an african parent, the children would be much more constant.
Reply:Not even worthy of an answer!
Reply:I find it quite puzzling that since it is now thought that human life began in Africa, how we have so many white people in the world!

After all, if the black gene was dominant, it would long since have displaced the white gene, and absolutely white could not come out of any sort of mix.

Pity that we are so concerned about skin colour, but whites want to be a sunburnt brown and in the Philippines (and likely elsewhere too) darker skinned people want to be white!

We should all be satisfied with what we are, and enjoy our differences!
Reply:Skin colour is boring. Who cares? LoL!
Reply:A very interesting question!

I have a friend, who is a 'thorough bred' white Englishman. He married a Chinese girl while we were together in the forces in Singapore. They had four children (three girls and a boy), all born here in the UK (all have Herefordian English accents, by the way) and they all consider themselves English. The mysterious thing is that they ALL 'look' Chinese. None of them look 'English', after their Dad.

Does that mean that Chinese genes are 'stronger' than English genes?
Reply:My friend's mom is african american and her dad is white(irish). She has whiter skin than i do and freckles, the only thing she got from her mom was cheekbones and the untameable hair. Black is not dominant and neither is white, it's actually a coin toss. My friend maya's dad is dark(south indian) and her mom is white(north european) and maya is white, her brother is as dark as her dad, and her second brother is in between. It really just depends.
Reply:I though twe were beyond skin colour.
Reply:Brown eyes and brown hair are dominant genes, but skin color is the result of many genes, so there would be a variety of colors among the children's skin tones.
Reply:As far as I know (I may be wrong), skin colour is not genetic. Skin colour of offspring tends to be a blend of the parents' skin colours. Exposure to the sun influences melanin levels, which change skin colour, so that is another factor.

Although skin colour isn't genetic, the same principle of the gene pool could apply. For example, dark-skinned individuals may stand out in African grasslands, and so, they may be preyed upon by predators. This reduces the number of dark-skinned individuals in the reproductive group, which influences the skin colour of that group's next generations.
Reply:i think its a genetic advantage as melanin in the skin protects us from UV
Reply:I think yes, though I'm not sure. The 'black skin color' and brown eyes, black hair etc, is the result of a gene encoding for the presence of melanin protein in the body. The more efficient the gene, the more melanin present in the body, the more darker the hair and eyes and skin.

In white people, the gene for melanin is not very active, the reason why their hair are lighter, skin is lighter, and the iris/retina pigment of the eye is lighter (ranging from brown, to blue to green, to gray etc).

I think in a mixed race couple, the more efficient Gene would likely pass on to the children, though of course according to Mendel's laws we can predict that a small fraction of say 1 in 10 would be perfectly white, (using the 9:3:3:1 ratio, that is the one which considers all the manifestations of a gene ) while others would have a mixed color. They could have blue eyes with dark skin/hair etc.

Genes are not easily predictable. you never know which gene went where during fertilization, and you never know whether it was counter-ed by another or not.

So this is all I can tell you, although I'm sure I haven't completely answered your question.
Reply:" I'm guessing none of them will have blond hair and blue eyes and none of them will have white, northern european type skin colour. "

My nephew is mixed and has blond curly hair, blue eyes, and light brown skin. I have meet his dad's family and none are mixed.
Reply:The plants Mendel used had only 1 gene locus to control flower color, so co-dominance and/or dominance/reccessiveness of the flower color was easy to understand. Human skin, eye, and hair color on the other hand is much more complex. The current estimate is approximately 5-10 genes that are involved in determining the skin tone of an individual. Some of these genes can be turned on or off in utero, and so skin color is extremely variable among the offspring of parents with different skin tones. I think that the genes for darker skin are generally dominant to those for lighter, but not always. Light skinned individuals with dark skinned ancestors can have children with darker skin than their own.

what should i use and what should the bride's maids use?

What flowers go should i use for a black and white wedding?
I personally think that a light pink color would look beautiful for your bridesmaids. Perhaps you could use roses or some tulips...

For you, I would do white calla lilies wrapped in black ribbon/fabric. Those are very lovely and elegant. ?
Reply:When i get married i want a black and white wedding too, it will look so classy and simple. Yeah, it doesnt seem like anyone is paying attention to the question. I want all white flowers, with black ribbon to tie them together, good flower options could be:

    Sweet Peas

    Hollyhock

    Zinnia

    Monkey Flower

    Petunia

    Dahlia

    Moss Rose

    Cosmos

    Bunny Tails

    Pampas Grass

    Straw Flower

    Calla Lily

    Caladuim

    Tuberose

    Amaryllis

    Rose

    Pansy

    Carnation

    Gladiolas

    Tulips

    Bachelor Buttons

    Dusty Miller (Silver)

    Alyssum

    Canterbury Belles

    Lily of the Valley

    Poinsettia

    Iris

    Morning glory

    Daisy

    Chrysanthemums

    Almond

    Geraniums

    Dogwood

    Crabapple

    Asters

    Clover

    Clematis

    Silver Lace

    Magnolia

    Snowball

    Flamingo Flower

    Butterfly Bush

    Hydrangea

    Celosia

    Mock Orange

    Rose of Sharon

    Ornamental Pear

    Purple Leaf Plum

    Nicotiana

As for the bridesmaids, just have your maid of honor carry a medium size version of your bouquet, and the other girls slightly smaller than that...all with the black ribbon. I think that if you ask your florist she can add small little black embellishments into the flowers like beads if you like, but that may get costly.
Reply:Whoa! When you say, "black and white" and which flowers, I think people assume COLOR is what you're looking for, not flower type. So before you go biting anyone's head off, clarify your own questions.

Type of flower is completely a personal choice. I hate roses, so wouldn't use those. But pretty much any flower can be dyed any color, so go with a color you like and pick a cheap, durable flower that is in season that YOU like.

(though I admit the "model" answer was kinda wierd...)

i would use roses because i think they are beautiful and work best with these colors. I would do fresh flowers also and not silks. if you use red i would do the blood red rose which is a darker red or pink roses. dont have the bridesmaids with white roses. if you chose to do white, keep the white roses for you.

What kinds of flowers do YOU like and what is your budget?

Obviously, you could go with anything.....tulips, roses, calla lillies, gerbera daisies, hydgrangeas. Really, any type of flower.

If you want a thought/ideaon color: I LOVE the contrast.....say, the girls with WHITE flowers (looks nice against the black dresses) and you with various shades of white...or if you wanted to add in some color....like pink OR red. That would look nice.

If you want the girls to have color: pink or red would be my choice for color against the black dress....especially pink. Then, you could do the traditional white bouquet, or, again , add in some soft (or bold!) color.
Reply:Just went to the florist last night... I'm using all red roses. My bouquet is two dozen red roses, and my one bridesmaid is one dozen red roses. I love the red/peach roses mixed in, but I'm not doing it for my wedding.

Also, roses are EXPENSIVE! To cut down costs, use gerbera daisies instead.
Reply:i actually love the idea of a black and white wedding, Why not white roses, with a few red roses? its simple, chic, classic, and i would arrange them in a sphere-shape. My family owns a wedding facility- lol...

their seeds actually have a feather-like structure which enables the seed to fly easily when they are blown by the wind.

however, try to examine also the seed structure of dandalions (im not just quite familiar about that plant coz its not common here in our place). If dandalion seeds are small and light, check if it has a feather-like structure which serve like a parachute of the seed so that when the wind blows, the seeds would easily be dispersed and fly. =)

Is it possible that when a red adenium was fertilized by a white one will produce a white offspring?

I bought a seedling a year ago of a red adenium, thats what the seller said, now it flowers it is white. The one who sold me might have given me the wrong seedling.

Is it possible that when a red adenium was fertilized by a white one will produce a white offspring?
Very possible, the only sure way to guarantee a red flower is to graft it. Adeniums are one of the easiest plants to graft. RScott

White Fungus on Cone Flowers - where does it come from?

Echinacea sp. (Coneflower) may get Pseudomanas or Xanthomonas leaf spot. Both are bacterial diseases. Sanitation is the main control for these leaf spots. Powdery mildew will also occur under the right weather conditions. Botrytis may also occur. May get brown dead areas as well as distorted leaves. These plants now get aster yellows. The disease causes a witches broom in the flower head, greening of petals sometimes, stunting and possible death of the plant. Infected plants should be destroyed. There is an eriophyid mite that causes the flower to develop lumps or bumps or leaf like structures growing out the side ? remove infested flowers and destroy them. (Note that the aster yellows and the mite can cause similar looking distortions if not checked closely.)

What wedding flowers go best with black and white dresses?

You have endless possibilities with those colors. A lot of it will depend on your budget and the style that you are going for. Do you want dramatic? Subtle? Do you want to carry all white? Do you want your bridesmaids to have different bouquets? There are lots of options...

If you are on a budget you can go with gerbera daisies. They are a beautiful and affordable flower. You can basically use any color that you wish. You could go with a nice red color, like this...

    http://www.weddingtactics.com/wp-content...

Or even a nice pink color... http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1116/5308...

If you don't really have a tight budget, you could go with something like calla lilies. Some beautiful deep purple lilies would look gorgeous....

    http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbvi...

    http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg10/...

Or some yellow calla lilies...it would add a nice dramatic touch.

    http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg10/...

Or there are the classic red rose: http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg10/...

Or some beautiful pink roses: http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg10/...

These are just some of many possibilites. You have a great color scheme to work with. You could always add another accent color to your scheme. You could have the black and white dress; then have all the flowers be purple, pink or whatever color you would like to add. It would look beautiful.

Ask your bridesmaids for their opinions as well...my advice would be to first find a color that you could like to go with; then work those colors of flowers into your budget.

I hope that this helps! Good luck to you :)

What wedding flowers go best with black and white dresses?
    red
    Reply:ROSES- DEEP DARK RED
Reply:You really could go with just about anything. Traditionally, red would be the color choice, but that's totally up to you.

If your whole wedding is going to have a black and white theme, you need to pick a third color anyway so maybe you can coordinate the flower colors with the decorations.
Reply:I would go with bright colors, such as reds, pinks or purple.
    Reply:pinks or reds
Reply:For a dramatic look use one color such as dark red or deep pink with a lot of greenery, but if you want to soften the effect and go with a pastel color you could do a multi-colored bouquet of your favorite flowers and that would be very beautiful too, you can also chose white flowers and incorporate ribbons of your favorite color, "Calla Lilies" and "Roses" are elegant, try to stay away from "Freesia's" as these do not last, they tend to drop their petal and turn brown fast, and carnations can be tinted any color. Hope this helps, Good Luck and Best Wishes to You and Your Fiance'.
Reply:either white flowers or bright flowers. I wouldn't go with a lot of green foliage.
Reply:Bright pink and purple tiger lilies look awesome w/ black and white dresses.

Reply:I think calla lillies are a beautiful flower with a simple elegance. The yellow inside would add a pretty accent. They also have a curvy and unique shape. They have long, thick stems and just a few look beautiful in a simple vase. I included a link below with a pciture. They are more expensive, but they are a large flower and you wouldn't need to use as many.

I live In Newfoundland, What Flowers would be best to plaint. The long winter snow as almost gone.?
You can check the link below to find your zone, but I think any hardy annual would be good - with your color pallette, I would grow pansies and impatiens, maybe some snap dragons for height, too. They should do well and last pretty long into fall as well. You can also keep Amaryllis - you put them out in summer, then take them in in winter and let them sit somewhere cool and go dormant. Then about two to three months later, you start to water them again and they will make these brilliant tropical flowers for you - easy to care for and brightens the winter up quite a bit when spring seems slow in coming.

Reply:Plum is a very popular winter color. Colors depends on what type of flowers you want to use and style of bouquets. For a mix... I would recommend shades of plums, purples, lavenders and some white. You don't want to go all white, in the pictures the flowers in the bouquets will all blend together. Shades of lavender, purples, plums and whites will show texture and the different flowers in the pics. For the bridal bouquet you can go mostly white, which is usually tradition but I always suggest a little color for the pictures. After everything is long over with ... all you have are memories and pictures... Good Luck

Make sure you give it lots of room..they tend to grow quite large..if you have good soil ,don't worry about the thrive et al..if you live above Sydney, water once a week..deeply till established..mulch well if still a small tree..BUT give it some room.Bauhinia I-forget-now..

I have a 6 foot white flowering shrub with opposite, simple leaves. What is it?

If the flowers are small and very fragrant, my guess would be honeysuckle. It's hard to guess on the info given, but the fact that the leaves are opposite is quite helpful, as most plants do not have this leaf arrangement. The Caprifoliaceae (honeysuckle) family is quite large and variable, try looking at some of these websites to see if it is your shrub. Honeysuckles are often used as landscaping shrubs because of the extremely fragrant flowers and their low maintainance needs.

    D. 3/4 pink

    E. no pink

In snapdragons, red × white produce pink. What proportion of pink flowers are expected from the cross pink ?
Your cross grid should look like this because both parents have one white allele and one red allele.

    -----|--R-----|---W

    R---|--RR---|---RW

    W--|--RW--|----WW

The Ratio is likely to be 1:1:2

The answer is B, 1/2 will be pink.
Reply:you mean the cross between two pinks then C is the answer. If you meant a red x white cross then B.

Two possible answers: If we assume that the gene codes for both red and white (but that both produce pink) then it's

    Answer A (traditional)

    rw X rw

    1/4 red (rr)

    1/4 white (ww)

    1/2 pink (rw)

    Answer B

Be careful though, because in some cases involving color, subsequent generations do not revert.

  • The resulting pink flowers which occur after crossing red and white snapdragons is most likely a result of ___

    Definately INCOMPLETE dominance.....not co-dominance.

Complete dominance is when you have either the dominant or recessive phenotype seen...this is pretty much all the examples when we first learn about genetics....3 genotypes ( AA, Aa,aa) and 2 phenotypes...

Incomplete dominance is where you get a BLENDING of the parental characters...eg Red ( RR) and White (rr) parents...Rr (pink) offspring...so 3 genotypes and 3 phenotypes

CO-dominance is where you have more than 1 dominant trait and in offspring you will see BOTH dominant traits eg in cows you have Red and White coats ( both dominant) in offspring you will see Roan ( red AND white....not pink!)

Also see this in human blood types where A and B are both dominant ( and o is recessive) so you have A, B ,AB ( and O) blood types....AB where both dominant characteristics are seen.

    JUST to clarify for you./

incomplete gene transfer or something i cant think of the exact term but im pretty sure its incomplete something

Definition: A form of intermediate inheritance in which heterozygous alleles are both expressed, resulting in a combined phenotype.

Upon crossing a true breeding red-flowered plant with a true breeding white-flowered plant all of your?

    offspring are pink! Why?

Upon crossing a true breeding red-flowered plant with a true breeding white-flowered plant all of your?
The F1 will be all pink due to the fact that each offspring has one red and one white allele which makes a pink phenotype.

If two alleles have an incomplete dominance relationship, the phenotype of the heterozygote will be intermediate between the phenotypes of the two homozygotes. This is often described as "blending," though the alleles themselves do not blend. The phenotype of looks like the two traits have blended together. One of the various genes which control flower color has two alleles, one for red flowers and one for white flowers. The two homozygous plants will produce red and white flowers, respectively. But the heterozygote will produce pink flowers--as if the two homozygous conditions were blended together like paint. In this case, the actual flower color (phenotype) probably results from varying amounts of production of the red pigment. The homozygous red plant produces a lot of the pigment, the homozygous white plant produces none of the pigment, and the heterozygote produces half as much as the homozygous red. There is no dominant allele here.
Reply:incomplete dominance i think? im not sure, i learned this like a long long time ago.
Reply:make a puget square and you will see.
Reply:that phenomenon is called incomplete dominance or no dominance, red and white are either dominant... so the traits blend...
Reply:if i am not wrong this is because of incomplete dominance in the plant.

a true red flowering plant has two alleles say RR and a true white flowering plant has alleles say WW. so when you construct a punnet square there are 4 analogous combinations RW. Therefore the plant is pink due to the alleles. i hope i am correct because i have not touched this for months =)

I have a wedding and I am wearing a dress. It is white with black flowers on it. Should I wear nylons?

Personally, as much as I hate nylons, I'd wear them. Unless the wedding is like at the beach or a barbeque somewhere, you should wear nylons regardless of the color dress you are wearing. That has nothing to do with it. The color nylon does: it should be nude or light toned but nothing darker than your skin tone.

In addition, there are nylons made to be worn with sandals. THey've been around for quite some time, but spend the money on them: go to a department store.

How do people make a flower or an item in a picture colored when the whole picture is black and white?
Can we say Photoshop (looks at previous answers - yes we can).

yeh - that is the best way. However - there is a HUGE factor each person forgot. The steps below assume that you are starting with a colored image (which if you are using digital - you should ALWAYS shoot color then convert to B%26amp;W)

    1. Open image

    2. Duplicate Background Layer (CTRL + J)

    3. Desaturate Layer 1 (CTRL + U)

    4. Adjust Levels of Layer 1 (CTRL + L) to get a better black and white

    5. (this si teh step everyone forgot) ERASE the subject that you want to be colored. Erase this on Layer 1 so that the color from the Background Layer shows through

    6. Flatten Image

    7. Save Image As
Reply:you might want to try adobe photoshop or painshop pro or any photo editing software.

first you have to select the graphic that you want colored, copy and paste it as a new layer (might be tricky if the image you want colored is intricate), then go to the background layer and desaturate it.

    good luck!

    Good luck!
Reply:Select the area you want to color with a tool in Photoshops toolbox(Photoshop Elements is the best software buy for the money) You can colorize using opacity ranging from 1-100%, that way it doesn't look contrived.

I would avoid ivory or yellow flowers as these will most likely clash with the colours of your dress/the bridesmaids dresses.

white flowers with some greenery are a pretty safe bet with the colours you've chosen.

Otherwise, what about some complimentary colours. It really depends on the shade of gold to what colours might look good. Blue or purple could be some suggestions, depending on what the gold looks like.

I would suggest if possible to take a swatch of the gold and then go to the florist and place flowers and ribbons next to the gold to see what color brings out the flowers and the gold color of the dresses the best. Your florist works with lots of colors and flowers daily, and depending on the time of year for your wedding what flowers will be available to choose your colors the best.

I would suggest, yellow roses, or tulips, which come in all colors, and will accent the gold and white. Also, I just did a wedding where we used yellow roses and died the top(tips) brown. It was beautiful, that would be a great accent. You need to throw an alternate color in to balance out the gold and white.

I have been growing basil at home. someone told me to pluck the little white flower buds.?
yes, you need to deflower the basil to keep it growing. It's better to not let it flower at all unless you want the flowers. The more you pinch out the basil the bigger the bush. Don't just take the flowers, take leaves and stems too.
Reply:I cut them up and drop them into salads. They are strongly flavored and you might as well use them for flavoring and as an extra spice for salads or with sliced tomatoes and olive oil..
    Reply:Yes you should.
Reply:I've heard that too -- I was told to pick off the flowers or the plant would get bitter and go to seed and not be tasty. Of course, if you want basil SEED, then you should let it flower.

Not a big deal, just pinch off the stem right where the leaves stop. Pinching leaves off your basil keeps it young, and makes it bushier, too, which means more basil for you.

I love daisies! They are my favorite flower and they have them all over my parents land growing wild and very pretty. My mom wants to make my flowers for the back home reception for my destination wedding to save money. She used to work at a flower shop. How well do you think this would work with red and white as the wedding colors? Or at this time of the summer?

Daisies for wedding flowers in end of July/begining of August? With red and white as wedding colors?
I think daisies are great, especially if you like them. My wedding was in the beginning of July, and I had Gerbera Daisies in my bouquet. I loved my flowers and got many compliments on them. The daisies were the flowers that were showcased in my bouquet, and were highlighted by ivy (which stands for marriage) and then other flowers with colors that coordinated with the bridesmaids dresses.
Reply:I love daisies as well! I plan to carry a bouquet of multi-colored Gerbera daisies as well as some regular white-and-yellow daisies at my wedding. I think you should use regular white daisies with a few bright red Gerbera daisies mixed in as your flowers, to match your wedding colors. I think late summer is the very best time to have daisies as your wedding flower. To me they are just so innocent and lovely. Good luck!
Reply:I'm a fellow daisey lover...and that includes a daisey-look-a-like flower, gallardia or indian blanket flower.....I have them both planted in my flower bed...the daisies are 'Broadway Lights'...they open up into a pale buttery yellow but then soften to a creamy white.....my gallardias are 'Arizona Sun'-a bright red %26amp; orangey-yellow and "Oranges%26amp; Lemons'-the name reflects the citrus-y colors....

Daisies would look great in a white %26amp; red bouquet.....I would look into Mums as well-they do come in daisey-look alikes but are very petal lush...painted daisies as well can add a splash of color.....gebera are over-done right now but they are an option......and this is daisey season...mine are in over-drive right now...good luck.
Reply:daisies are one of my favorite flowers, too...you can definitely use them, just mix them with some red colored wildflowers, and the bouquet will look great...
Reply:I think they would look cute! Especially if you kind of went with a country style wedding reception.
Reply:Sounds very pretty.... I would stick to all those colors... it is perfect for the summer.
Reply:I think it would be fine for your reception back home... and it will save you money too. You could always order some red flowers from Sams or CostCo to add in to keep your color scheme
Reply:i think ti will be great, especially since they are your favorite

    Your welcome:) Report It
Reply:I might soften this color scheme. It's becoming popular to have bridesmaids wear black, but white and silver with this will look a little garish. Unless you're careful, red flowers will make it look like your prom.

Sterling roses are beautiful and are kind of a silvery lavender. Mixing this with some ivory flowers and lots of greenery would look classy. For brighter flowers, deep purple dendrobium orchids are a terrific bright purple.

Accenting your flowers with pewter napkins, ribbons, etc. instead of silver would also soften the look.
Reply:You could throw in a splash of color and do red. But, who says you have to use flowers? If it's a nighttime wedding, your bridesmaids could carry candles. If it's outdoors, they could carry parasols. Or they could use beautiful folding fans if it's inside. Have fun with it.
    Reply:lillies
Reply:If you would be willing to throw some color into that...throw some deep red roses...the contrast would be beautiful. But if you are interested in keeping with the silver, white, and black theme...I would go for white roses.

    Sounds very formal.

    Congratulations!
Reply:What color dresses are the girls wearing? I am assuming black.

Did you by any chance see the "My Fair Brady" where they got married? She had a blackand white wedding and she used roses that were a very deep dark red, absolutely beautiful. But I would only suggest this for an evening/night wedding, those colors are too heavy for a daytime wedding.
Reply:hmmm if i were you i'd either go for some fake black silk flowers which i think would look really classy or otherwise some white lilies which would bring a bit of pink in as well i would imagine..

i dont think roses would suit it as the colours you have chosen are quite dramatic and over power the delicate flower whereas the lilies have 'sharper' petals and make more of a statement..

    have a lovely wedding x
Reply:calla lillies... but i wouldn't go with black.... black is more for a funeral.
Reply:Calla lilies, gladiolas, orchids, white roses would all be really elegant, especially if left long on the stem and tied with silver and black ribbons (except gladiolas, which really don't have long stems). All but the white roses are fairly expensive, though, just to warn you. I really like the other idea about the fans, parasols, candles et all too..
Reply:Those are some beautiful classic colors so simple petite flowers would look wonderful. There are quite a few shades of pink roses that would look great with some white den. orchids, pink wax ( its a tiny waxy flower that smells amazing ) lizianthis (spelling sorry) and calla lillies. Adding in tea roses with the larger roses always look very delicate and pretty too!
Reply:you have nice colors...hmm I'd say white flowers because that's only color out of the colors you have that seems reasonable. I would go with a deep read color though and mix it with the black. I mean surround the red flowers with the black color items. Flowers wise, I love roses or carnations, but lilies may work too.best wishes!!!!!

  • I have flowers that are dying. How can I bring them back?

The flowers are "White Pearl" Hyacinth (turning brown), and Viola(wilting). the flowers are for my wedding in 1 weak. they are in pots right now, but I would Like to Plant them Before the Wedding. Is it a lost cause?

I have flowers that are dying. How can I bring them back?
Usually when there's a wedding the flourist brings in fresh flowers for that day, within a couple of hours prior to the wedding. I've never heard of home flowers being in pots for a wedding. I suggest you call the flourist. No you can't bring back leaves or flowers that have turned brown. They could be brown either because it's getting hotter and sooner outdoors these days, or it could have been either lack of water or too much water.
Reply:For the one that is wilting, try putting it in a sink of cold water, not too high of course. I had wilting plants before and that brought them back to life. I'm not sure about the one that is turning brown. It might work to if there is any green left on it. P.S- I don't have a green thumb!! But soaking the plants in the sink seemed to work. Maybe it was because they were getting water from the roots up, instead of the other way around,

How do you use White Flower balm?

I love this stuff. On the temples for a headache %26amp; sinuses; in the bath to inhale for a cold, on the skin for muscles aches (along with Tiger Balm). Its even great to sprinkle some on kleenex or cloth to breathe in on air planes etc.

Would it be approptiate to have an ALL white wedding everyone wearing white?

I am thinking that it would be wonderful to have an all white wedding. This includes white dresses for bridesmaids, white flowers, etc. Is this okay or is the tradition that only the bride wears white still holding true even today?

Would it be approptiate to have an ALL white wedding everyone wearing white?
I say go for it. So what if it's not traditional? I kind of love that idea. ALLLLL white or would you have have some bold accent color?
Reply:Your wedding, your day, you have all the say.

If a person can have a STAR WARS wedding, or an underwater wedding, or dance the THRILLER dance at the wedding, why can't YOU have an all WHITE wedding?
Reply:There's not really such a thing as 'appropriate' any more. At one time, the idea of bridesmaids wearing black was considered horrifying. It's pretty common now.

White is definitely unusual but it is not inappropriate. Who knows? You could start a new trend!
Reply:you can do whatever you want for your wedding....there are no rules as to what people HAVE to wear...i think that would be awesome seeing as how not many people do that so it would be cool and might start a new trend
Reply:ummm i guess its okay but u should tell your wife first cuz she may want to be the only one wearing white
Reply:my cousin and his wife had an all white wedding - the men in white tuxes the girls in white gowns and flowers in all white. the bride and groom looked the same as everyone else, in fact it was difficult to tell who was who when they all had white on.

all white attire is not my favourite - i think there is nothing sexier than a man in a black tux! i also think the bride should stand out in the wedding party - hence her wearing white and everyone else in colors.

whatever you choose have a great wedding.
Reply:I have heard of those. THe bride is supposed to stand out, but you still will even if veryone else is wearing white. If you love the idea, go for it.

You cannot tell people what to wear though. YOu can let them know what it is (I think there are a few terms though I don't know them), but it is up to them. White isn't hard to get so people will probably do it.
Reply:I agree, it's your wedding and you shouldn't worry about traditions. The all white wedding is very modern and creative. However, the bride will not stand out as much if the entire party is wearing white. I say go for it unless that's an issue for her.
Reply:If you all want to look like floating heads in photos then go for it.

I do not like all white weddings. The photos are boring and very non descript.

If the all white wedding is done wrong or not well then it looks like a bad prom exploded.

I hate to be the dissenting vote, but there would be nothing to distinguish you from anyone else. There are ways to be unique and creative an still pull of a spectacular event.

If you want to incorporate white, why not have the guys wear white dinner jackets? That would look much better than white tuxs.
Reply:I think it is your wedding and any color is fine. My wedding dress was black. Its just a color why do people make an issue of it?
Reply:You know what that is not a bad idea!! The only down fall would be peoples skin tone doesnt always work with white and lot of women think "white makes me look fat"...not to mention the billy idol song "white wedding"
Reply:I think that sounds pretty cool. Not sure about the pictures though. Would they look boring? or beautiful? If you want a little color, you could pick bridesmaids dresses that are white with a colored trim.
Reply:well tradition does say that only the braid can wear white that way she is the focus. if everyone is wearing white how will you be noticed? but if that's what you want talk to you fiance and see if he agree's then go for it.
Reply:Traditions are meant to be broken. By all means - if you want an all white wedding - go for it.
Reply:if thats what you want then go for it
Reply:You are going to blend into your wedding photos and not stand out at all.
Reply:"Tradition" is relative - in some cultures, the bride doesn't even wear white.

It's your wedding, so you're allowed to choose whichever colors you like. People might comment that it's untraditional, but it's your special day, so do what makes you the happiest.
Reply:I think it would be beneficial to have some sort of accent color instead of just white. Even if it was just something subtle like silver or a pale pastel. An accent would add texture.
Reply:That would be perfectly fine! I have seen couples do this, and it can look lovely. Very simple and sweet.

If the bride's wedding dress is considerably fancier than those of her attendants, then she will still stand out. If you want to do this, I would probably suggest putting the bridesmaids in cocktail-length or tea-length simple dresses and the bride in a floor-length dress with some crystals or beadwork.

I'm not sure how you would make the groom stand out if all the men wore white tuxes. Maybe he could have a special boutonniere, a different vest and tie, or a tuxedo in a fancier style?
Reply:It is traditional that the bride only wears white. However, it is your wedding and you can do what you want when it comes to your wedding. It is your day and you can do whatever you want to do.

The reasoning behind the bride only in white is so that she stands out. You can do what you want. Enjoy your day.
    Reply:yes in a fairy tale...

I am trying to identify an evergreen tree in my yard in Melbourne. It has clusters of small purple flowers.?

It has clusters of small purple flowers with white edges, on spray like stems on the end of the branches. It appears to flower from late spring through til the beginning of winter. Bees and butterflies love the flowers. Just now some of the flowers are giving way to small yellow/orange berries. The leaves are green with serrated edges and the trunk is light in colour and fairly smooth. No one I know can identify it and I haven't had any luck on websites.

Tree/shrub (4-6' tall) with large (6"?) white bell shaped flowers?

This past summer I drove past a house that had a large shrub (or a small tree) in the yard that had extremely large (maybe 6 inches long) white bell shaped flowers. The plant was growing in the front yard of a house in a zone 5 climate. The flowers were all over the bush/tree and the plant looked pretty unique. The flowers almost looked like white lilies that faced the ground and had a bell like shape to them.

Since it was in someone's yard and I was driving by in a car I didn't get the best look at it but the flowers appeared to be white. I didn't see any other markings on the flower.

Anyone have any idea on what this may be?

Reply:It might be a catalpa tree. They bloom in the summer and are pretty spectacular. There are a lot of them in my zone 5 region. The trees get huge but even when they're small they bloom profusely. I might be wrong because to me the flowers look more like orchids than lilies but you never know. • How do you remove pollen stains on cotton that are from the white lily flower?

the stamin in the lily is reddish, and the pollen, once on the fabric is yellowish.. I have tried dish soap, laundry soap, Shout stain remover.. To add to my latest collection are 2 pink cotton tops... thanks.

How do you remove pollen stains on cotton that are from the white lily flower?
I know your problem-such pretty flowers, but awful pollen. Have you tried hydrogen peroxide-the mouthwash type? What about applying lemon juice and putting out in the sun?

When I have had the stain on my white sink I sprayed it with Clorox CleanUp but that may be too harsh for the fabric.

As a last resort, you might try phoning a florist to ask how they have handled the problem. There may be a website for something like The Fabric Institute to help. As popular as this type of lily is, I doubt if you are the first with this problem.
Reply:After I answered I went to a floral demonstration and asked your question. His best suggestion was to were latex gloves when working with the flowers but no ideas for solutions to your problem other than what I suggested. Report It
Reply:My solution only works on white cotton, sorry.

*I* pour a drop or two of cheap bleach in the cap, then take a Q-tip and dip it in there, then dab that on the spot. Allow that to sit for a bit ( a minute or less) and launder. *I* use Gain liquid. It works everytime for me!
Reply:Hi there. I use hydrogen peroxide. It bubbles on the stain. I rinse and repeat as needed. Then I make a paste out of powder detergent and apply it to the stain. I then add the regular amount of detergent in the washing machine and launder as usual. This is also good for blood. Have a great day.
Reply:Try a white bar of soap rub it on the inside and the outside of the material hope it works!

I would like to grow more peace liles from seeds. can i retrieve the seeds from the white flowering blooms?

if so how? I hear that any plant that blooms creates seeds, i just dont know how to cultivate them...

I would like to grow more peace liles from seeds. can i retrieve the seeds from the white flowering blooms?
I would say the seeds will be sterile unless you polinate. That is not a self polinating plant.

What you need to do is to take an ordinary "Q" tip and then get some pollen from another plants bloom and polenate the plant you want as seed pod. Just rub it around in there, dont be too fusy it will polenate.

Then wait till the pod has died down and the seeds form.It must turn brown and shriveled , cut it off and dry the seed pod further on a window sill and in the sun.

You have a choice on planting time. If you plant in the late fall, the seeds will lay dormant and absorb water from the winters snows and then germinate in spring.

Or you can take the seeds and soak them for 3 or 4 days in a jar of water, pass the water thru a sieve, retrieve the seeds and plant in a sterile medium pot keeping it moist.

I grow day lillies and I am very familar with this plant.

Why not use the root shoots in your case, you are not trying to develope a new variety,. Youd want seeds to develope a new cross polly variety.
Reply:ok.. i found some info about peace lilies that u might find REALLY helpful..

Young plants of Spathiphyllum are available from tissue culture or seed. The propagation of Spathiphyllum by tissue culture offers the grower the advantage of selected named varieties, improved crop uniformity and year round availability. Since this crop is backed by extensive breeding programs, commercial growers and consumers can expect a consistent supply of new cultivars.

Spathiphyllum produced from seed has, until recently, lost volume to tissue culture production. Previously, seed production, although economical, tended to lack the quality and uniformity demanded by today's growers. Recently, large scale production of seed crops has gained popularity due to controlled seed production backed by excellent production and marketing systems.

There is more info on the site.. i dont wanna post it all on here

    the site i found was:

    http://www.oglesbytc.com/culture-spathip...

    Hope it helps
Reply:i thnk you can. i would actually bring it by the local plant nursery they could help you more there
Reply:I have not heard of peace lilies being raised from seed, even if this were possible it would be a lenghty %26amp; tedious procedure,if you have enough blooms for seeds, it would be easier %26amp; a fool proof method to divide the plants %26amp; replant rooted portions of a few plants each.
Reply:I don't know about peace lillies specifically... But with any plant the blooms are what are fertilising the seeds. You need to wait until the flowers dry up and fall off, then what's left is usually some sort of pod or container depending on the plant that contains the seeds. But to get seeds that will grow you normally need to have more than one plant! Or else the seeds won't be fertilised.

Will my white flower girls dress match my bridesmaids dresses?

My flower girls dresses are white with a taupe sash and my bridesmaids are champagne with a taupe sash. My dress is a diamond white. Do you think this will all blend?

Will my white flower girls dress match my bridesmaids dresses?
I think so! The flower girls always seem to wear white... it gives them that sense of innocence that they inevitably have. It will be very pretty! I love your colors.
Reply:It sounds great! My gown was white, my bridesmaids gowns had an off-white background with a floral print of light and dark mauves, soft yellow, peach and seafoam green. My flowergirls dresses were both white. They had white floral and butterfly design in the material. Since they were plain, I wanted to tie a sash around their waist. One of the girls had red hair, so I went with the seafoam green. I took a swatch to a craft store and got several yards of sheer ribbon about 1/2" wide the same green as in the bridesmaids dresses. I merely tied the ribbon around my flowergirls' waists! They looked amazing!
Reply:Definately - your wedding party sounds like it will be beautiful! I've seen many flower girls is all white and think that looks best, my daughter wore one once and she looked like a miniture bride!

    Congratulations!
Reply:Probably not. I would have probably done the same thing. Champagne is a tanish color, toned down. So, if you think Tan, and think white, they don't blend too evenly. Depending on your taste, and decor, I think it would work out.

    Best of luck,

    Han
Reply:Should be just fine. The flower girls wear white to celebrate the bride with taupe I am assuming as your wedding color. The bridesmaids are wearing your other color choice champagne also with the taupe it should all tie together nicely.

I agree with Kermit, just somebody named Paul who painted blue and white flowers. Period ....end of story
Reply:Some dude named Paul painted a picture of flowers.

    No, its not worth anything.
Reply:if you really would like to know the answer, i would suggest that you go to your local modern arts museum.. most have libraries that are special collections or art, art history, art theory books, and of course biographical indexes of many artists.

however it could also be that the painting you have was created by someone who just liked painting. if you look at the materials it was made with, they should offer you some clue about the painting.
Reply:At least a picture to make anything out of that.

I have a white yoshino flowering tree behind my home that is very nice and?

about full grown, but there is a split between the two main trunks and some bugs have gotten in...I have seen earwigs before, but now something that looks like walking wasps? Is that carpenter ants or termites? I put some dishsoap in there sometimes and sometimes some rubbing alcohol to kill the bugs...there is a lot of rotten wood in the split, but the top of the split is holding good so far and the leaves are green...any ideas on this?

Have an arborist look at the tree. If it is diseased they may be able to save it. If you let it go, it sounds like the tree will die eventually.

Why are some genes recessive and dominant and some mix; tall and short flowers, and red and white combine pink

    links appreciated.

Why are some genes recessive and dominant and some mix; tall and short flowers, and red and white combine pink
Some alleles are dominant because the gene product (the protein) "overwhelms" any recessive alleles that are also expressed.

For example, if you make a functional enzyme, and also produce a non-functional enzyme, but you can get on fine with only 50% of your enzyme functioning, then the functioning enzyme will be dominant. Also - the feedback mechanisms to control gene expression may well stay "on" if not enough functioning protein is made, so you'll end up with 200% of the normal amount of protein, with only half of it functional, but the end result is the same as if it was 100% made with it all functional. So if you cross red and white flowers, and the red allele makes pigment, but the white allele doesn't, you'll still end up with a red flower in the progeny.

Other times, the non wild-type allele can produce a protein that actually *interferes* with the function of the normal, wild-type protein. For example, maybe it binds irreversably to the substrate, preventing normal binding of the wild-type protein. In this case, the mutant allele acts like an inhibitor of the normal protein, and will be dominant.

So if you cross white and red flowers, and the "white" allele interferes with the metabolic pathway for making the red pigment, the progeny will all be white.

"Mixing" can happen when the different alleles make different end-proteins that are both expressed, but don't interfere with each other. So if a red and white flower are crossed, the progeny might make both red and white pigment, and will be pink; this is "Codominance" (and is what is seen in human ABO blood types)

Alternatively, the plant may just make half the normal amount of pigment, and will therefore be pink (Incomplete Dominance).

My bridesmaids have Apple red dress can I use red and white rose in there flowers?

Definitely - I'd use the red as accent though - you don't want to over power the dress - think of the picture - if a girl is standing there, would you be able to see her bouquet infront of the red dress, or would they blend in?

My bridesmaids have Apple red dress can I use red and white rose in there flowers?
yes you could. but not to much on the red. Have the red as an accent color. But it would be pretty.
Reply:Sounds like everyone has already answered it but definitely...go with white and reds as the accent. There are so many ways you can go wtih this too! White is very popular in so many beatiful flowers! Good luck!!!
Reply:Try adding in some rich green leaves to compliment the roses and bring out their color against the dresses. Just no baby's breath, too cliche!
Reply:Yes as they have the colour red in their bouquet but ur also using the colour of ur dress I assume which would look great. It would be the colour of their dress and ur dress together and I assume Ur's might be either the same but bigger or just white or just red. Congrates and good luck.
Reply:Don't use red flowers as the main flower, it will blend too much into the dress. I love orange and I got orange lillies for our bouquets but my girls are wearing teal so the colors really pop. Good luck!
Reply:Yes. I'd throw some pink in too. Or a dark purple which will set off the red. Take a look at different Valentines bouquets on FTD, 1800 flowers, etc. and see what colors/ flowers you like.
Reply:Sure I think matching the red dresses with flowers will match nicely. good luck
Reply:Yes you can. But just a little advice. Put a third color in to kinda break up the two colors. It will make the flowers come out away from the dress more.
Reply:yes, but don't use too many. you want them to focus on the dress. oh, make sure the color matches, keep it in the same shade, don't mix a different shade like wine in there.
Reply:Yes but use the red sparingly, 1-5 for a full bouquet.

What can I use instead of egg whites to make sugar coated flowers?

I have edible flowers and I 'd like to coat them with sugar. I saw on the food network that you coat them with a little egg white and water first. I don't want to use raw egg whites and I don't have powder egg whites on hand. Any suggestions?

What can I use instead of egg whites to make sugar coated flowers?
    honey or corn syrup maybe??
Reply:Egg substitute watered down. It's pasteurized, so you don't have the same risks as with raw egg whites.
    Reply:No

    you defy the recipe..

    PS what difference

I have never see powdered whites..

    It sounds redundant

Reply:I am in love with jewel tones and used mostly vibrant reds and purples in my wedding. I told those colors to my florist and he added some other colors here and there so it wasn't just two colors everywhere and it was amazing. So you can use different reds like black magic roses (http://www.rirs.org/show2004photos-ks/01... and valencia roses (http://www.hickerphoto.com/data/media/18... and add to it with purple flowers like irises (http://www.ancientrootsresearch.com/Hap-... some beautiful hot pinks like stargazer lilies (http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbvi... and orchids (http://houseonahill.net/flowers/wp-conte... and some white here and there like navona lilies (http://www.thelilygarden.com/images_lili... These are just a few ideas but my centerpieces were amaaaazing. Good luck and have fun with it!

Ok, I just noticed that none of my websites work when you click on it and I don't know why! I'm sorry about that. Please go to google and search for my suggestions and click on "images" on the top left corner so you can see lots of pictures of the flowers I suggested. They are truly beautiful and I hope you like them :)
Reply:I think the orange rustic colored flowers look beautiful with red roses.
Reply:Pink carnations are lovely with red roses.
Reply:Try any green (for the greenery %26amp; to be a filler where there might be a space if you are doing it yourself.)

Also try peach, silver, gold, beige %26amp; russet.
Reply:I have seen lilac babies breath with red roses and that was very attractive.
Reply:Dark blue or any shade of pink would look great with red.

There were wreaths of white flowers at both reagan's and fords funerals. why?

Probably because, assuming that they were white roses (not rose buds) they are suppose to signify a heavenly aspect.

There were wreaths of white flowers at both reagan's and fords funerals. why?
    why not
Reply:Because the white flowers are why the white house is called white (not the paint, it was painted white later) and becuase they are former presidents the white house gives them a wreath of white flowers. ;-)
    Reply:lillies ?
Reply:because they were in the same cult

During what period of time does White Flowering Dogwood bloom?

    From when-to-when?

During what period of time does White Flowering Dogwood bloom?
Spring..and depending on the area you live...in my coastal NC area, it is late March or early April to May...cooler climes will be later, warmer climates, much earlier...and then you have to factor in if you've had a "false" spring to make them bloom early...

but around Easter is usually when you will see them in bloom..

  • What tree in south alabama attracts hundreds of butterflies and has white fuzzy ball like flowers?

Cephalanthus occidentalis (button-willow or honey-bells, but around here in Delaware we call it buttonbush, which is the problem with common names -- lol!!) check the link below to Wikipedia and see if that is what you have. My husband got this one for me and says it will definitely get you butterflies and grow to tree height in good conditions. He did landscape architecture for 25 years before doing restoration ecology now.

First link is just the photo of the flowers (fuzzy white ball), second is article about the bush/tree. Hope this is it.
