Anyone know how to care for Calla Lilies?

I have 2 plants, I'm not even sure they are Calla Lilies. They have huge leaves, and big white flowers with a long orange yellow center. The leaves are turning brown now, and the blooms are gone. Am I supposed to cut them back?

Anyone know how to care for Calla Lilies?
We have the white Calla Lillies. Once the flower has died off cut the flower stem right down . Keep the yellow seed part ( inside lillie), wear protective gloves and spread the yellow seeds around your garden they keep the cats away. Once they have all flowered and died off, cut everything right down to the ground.Leaves etc.
Reply:cut the old flowers off. Seeds develop in the old flower. You may want to let it do that just to see how it works. Its pretty neat.

Is this what they look like? Make sure they have lots of water and sun. Mine have the spotted leaves. I just love that!

I had them for 2 years and I just loved those pretty spotted leaves. It did bloom twice this year in its new spot.

They have bulbs and in there is plenty of energy. If the whole plants looks like its in trouble, I would cut it all back and let it regrow.

You will have to dig up the bulbs in the fall if you live in a wintry area like New England and store it in your cool basement with your other semitropical bulbs.

Some callas can stand the winter I am told, but I don't take the chance with mine.

I wonder though are you talking about Cannas? I don't remember any of them coming in White. Just red and yellow and orange.

I love them too. I got lots. Just Wikipedia them and you will know how to take care of them. Basically the same as Callas. They love water and sun. The more, the better. Callas are one plant that would thrive on overwaterings.
Reply:They must be kept very moist at all times!

2. You can let them grow outdoors, in spring and summer, but they must be kept wet!

3. Bring them indoors in fall and winter!

Good luck!

Reply:Most orchids bloom only one time a year ~ they are usually not dead after they bloom ~ just napping. Indeed there are very few indoor plants (or outdoors for that matter) that will stay in bloom for more than a few months out of the year.

Anthuriums can grow quite well indoors and will continue to bloom if given a bit of monthly fertilizer. Spathyphyllums (peace lillies) are also wonderful indoor plants with lovely white flowers and they require very little bright light.

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is a wonderful bloomer ~ flowers last 2-3 months and then they should be cutback given a bit of a resting period ~ they start forming blooms again in about a month. They do need some sunshine though.

Most flowering plants really do much better outdoors. Having good air circulation ~ an open window nearby can make a very big difference. If your doors %26amp; windows are locked %26amp; closed up most of the time ~ you will probably have difficulty getting any houseplants to bloom.

  • What is this hosta looking plant?

I love the flower on this plant and am trying to figure out what it is. I thought it was a hosta as the leaves look identical. But I don't believe that is what it is. The flowers spike out like a hosta but have a much thicker stem. The one I have has a white flower and is extremely fragrant. They have an oblong flower when closed that opens up to a funnel shaped flower. My hostas finished flowering many weeks ago here in Connecticut and these plants have just flowered now. I'd love to get more of these but don't know what they are! Any ideas?

What is this hosta looking plant?
sounds like peace lily but I think they're just houseplants except for tropical regions....

Is it wrong to wear a white sundress (with pink accents) to a wedding shower?

Hi, I'm going to a wedding shower held at the bride's house and I have a white strapless sundress with pink embroidered flowers and a pink sash/tie. Is in inapropriate to wear a mostly white dress to the shower? or does this only apply to the wedding? The invitation didn't mention anything about attire.

Reply:No. You just can't wear it to the wedding.
Reply:No. but the outfit descibes what you'd wear to an outdoor party.
Reply:A shower doesn't follow the same etiquette as a wedding. It sounds like a perfectly appropriate outfit for a shower, assuming it's a warm day. Just don't wear it to the wedding. ;)

Why are my red crape myrtles blooming white?

These are "Dynamite" crape myrtles that have bloomed a beautiful red the past 2 years. This year they're blooming white. What nutrient is missing or is it just the heat?

I live in Texas and we've had 5 straight days of 100 degree heat with no end in sight and of course we're in a drought. I've watered them and my roses (instead of the lawn);I don't care about grass but I really don't want to lose my flowers. HELP!

Why are my red crape myrtles blooming white?
Crape myrtles thrive in intense summer sun and are extremely tolerant of very dry conditions, but cannot survive winter temperatures much farther north than Arkansas. Like most summer blooming shrubs, produce their flowers on new growth. So, if pruning is to be done, it should be completed in the early spring before new growth begins.

    http://www.cherylsgardenparty.com/2005/B...

Crape myrtles do not require much fertilizer. They are also adaptable to a fairly wide soil pH range, from 5.0 to 6.5. A soil test provides the best standard for determining the amount of fertilizer that is needed and whether the pH is at the appropriate level for your plants. However, one pound of actual nitrogen per thousand square feet of bed area is usually adequate to support new growth in an established tree. Be aware that over fertilization can reduce cold hardiness.

Reply:Your crape myrtle is a tree-form crape that can reach 20'. These commonly try to revert to the original state. Just cut off the branch that's white %26amp; keep pruning to a minimum--any basal shoots can be trimmed while young, and any dead stuff is OK to cut--but other than occasional shaping your trees do not need pruning.

Also, your crape is well-established by now--stop watering it! These are very drought-hardy and need only 2 inches per month in the worst heat.
Reply:Don't have a clue, but something is going on. Saw a crepe myrtle the other day with both colors on it. It is usually red only (have admired it for 10 years). Other people have also written asking the same question about other types of flowers. I also live in Texas. Yes, it's hot. But is always hot here in summer. Sure hope someone has an answer. This is curious.
Reply:Maybe the ph of your soil has changed. We have some flowering shrubs that determine their color on the acidity of the soil. Maybe crepe myrtles do that too.
    Reply:maybe the drought?
Reply:it's having an identity crisis. may it thought you needed a change. plants seem to adapt to their enviroment. that's probably what yours is doing. don't worry as long as it looks healthy. i think watering it is a good idea though. don't want to fry it in the heat. good luck with it.
Reply:I Believe it has to do with the acid and alkaline levels Iin the soil. Just like with Hydrangeas. Test your soil to see what levels you have. Your local nursery can help with a solution. In the mean time, enjoy the beatiful white blooms.
Reply:could be they get cross polinated too or nutrients missing give them some mirical grow and some water in the evenings i live in texas too and the heat is wilting everything, so i water my plants in the late evening
Reply:Probably has to do with the alkalinity of your soil.

Does anyone know of a website that I can look at all the different types of flowers?

I am planning a wedding in another state. Before I travel up there to check out florists I would like to have in mind a rough image of what I want, i.e. type and color of flowers. Is there a website that I can see all the different types of flowers and different colors they come in? I already know I want a hand tied round bouquet but the type is stumping me....I'm think very natural with white, ivory, and green.

  • What is a floweret? Can it be used to mean "small flower"?

I would like to find a classy-sounding phrase that means "small white flowers." Could I say "white flowerets"? In looking online, it sounds like "flowerets" is usually used to refer to little tiny flowers that make up a larger flower, such as a head of broccoli. But can "flowerets" also be used to refer to little flowers found in fields? If not, what's a better word? Thanks!

What is a floweret? Can it be used to mean "small flower"?
The tiny flowers that make up larger flowers (like daisies) are usually known as florets. When "flowerets" is used for broccoli it usually means one of the small, stalked units of the head ... if you let the head flower, that unit would be a bunch of flowers, not a single small one.

Not sure that I can think of a "classy-sounding" term for small white flowers.

What is your opinion and why on which color scheme for flowers should we use for a black and white wedding?

We are using roses and the bridesmaids dresses are black with a white sash. Should we use red roses for their bouquets or white? And for me the bride what color of roses should I have?

What is your opinion and why on which color scheme for flowers should we use for a black and white wedding?
Those are my colors as well and I am carrying all red roses. Mostly because I think white roses against the white or ivory dress get lost, but also because it always looks off to me. Since my girls are in black dresses they are carrying the white roses and white stephanotis with crystals in the middle of them. I just don't like the white bouquets against the white dresses, and I want to say because they don't match but it's more than that. I just can't explain it better. The red against your beautiful dress will pop and it is so classic. I have just seen too many white bouquets that look funny against the white dress, but that's just my opinion. Red roses, cliche or not, will be timeless, so don't let anyone tell you differently.

SO in my opinion white for the girls and red for you. It will be beautiful.

Scroll down here to see what I am talking about with the white bridal bouquet against the dress. It almost makes them look yellow to me.

Reply:I just attended a wedding that used the colors black, white, and red. It was lovely.

All the flowers were red roses . . . with the exception of the flowers used on the arch. The arch (where the couple was wed) was decorated with tulle, white flowers, and greenery.

The men wore red rose bouts. The girls carried red roses. It looked awesome against their black dresses. The bride also carried a hand-tied bouquet of red roses . . . but her bouquet was larger.

I vote for red. It will be lovely.
Reply:I think it would be nice to have the bridal party carry all red roses. Then you can carry red roses, but with hints of stephanosis in it - like this one.

    http://www.flowerjanet.com/Photos/Weddin...

Then you could have your bouquet wrapped in red ribbon and the bridesmaids can have theirs wrapped in white ribbon - or vice versa.

I hope that this helps! Good luck ?
Reply:add some color ...I'm guess their gowns are solid black and the sash is solid white... give them red and white flowers.. your bouquet should be...red,pink,white ( mostly red and white)...red..is bold..and the pink add's softness drawing away from all the black. so defiantly give them colored flowers but of course not as elaborate as the bride!!! good look on your wedding! :)
Reply:Instead of red, how about bright pink? It's in the same color family, so it would look just as good as red (and in my opinion, better!) You can always do roses, or if you want to be less traditional, I think tulips would look great.
Reply:White would be good if you dont want to accent with color however I've always seen black and white weddings done with red roses.
Reply:bridesmaids should carrey red.. and you should have a bouquet with red and white

Can anyone give me a good comprehensive website so as I can Identify a species of tree?

I have a tree with simple rounded leaves which are downy on the upper side. It bears no friut or berries but does have white flowers about 1 in in diameter. The flowers consists of 5 petals and are highly fragrant and together form a star shape. They have long white stamens with red tips. The flower buds are a semi-open fat umbrella shape and dark pink in colour with the white flower wrapped up inside and resembling a pearl. The flower/bud clusters resemble a chandalier in appearance. Blooming August - September. The tree itself is about 12-15ft high and about 8ft wide at its widest point. The growing habit ( shape ) of the tree is similar to that of the Lilac. I have inherited this tree with my new house in the UK but the tree not nessasarily be native to the UK. Any help

How to make my room look blazin with DIY projects and creative ideas/how to deal with ugly walls and carpets?

The walls and carpet thing was not my fault. I knew what I wanted but my dad said that I might think it was stupid in about a year. The walls are beige and the floor is green, I have matching bedding- it's kind of a cabana thing going on, I even have a bamboo curtain for my window that i'm going to put up. How do I make my room awesome? I have a lot of different tastes, I kind of want a gothic looking canopy from Hot Topic and I kind of want these hanging light things that are white flowers that light up. I definitley will put pictures up and maybe I could do something to the floor to hide it? Please help, I dont have much money but a birthday coming up and I really want a room that says me better. Im an 18 year old girl.

How to make my room look blazin with DIY projects and creative ideas/how to deal with ugly walls and carpets?
The walls are easy, throw on some paint for starts. Then for som. diff. and cool try a wall of silky curtains behind the bed with some throw pillows. You can buy the fabric and get creative or buy off the shelf. What tends to work best for a personalized "decorated" look is the a lil this an a lil that techn. and just pull it all together. As for the carpet, have no fear momma Star is here. All you have to do is think of that floor as if it were a big ugly sweater. You wanna go goth or gurrly goth? All you have to do is find a color and dye it. Black would actually work well to really cover the green esp. if it's dark. It does work, trust me. It would help for you to scrap together some pics of things you just have to have and then work from there on color and other items. With your colors, to go for a cool dreamy effect i find it best to stick to a few blending shades. Like a deep modern(no baby shower!) pink- funky purple and smoky blue. Whatever your colors, just make sure they dont differ so widely that the room looks a jumble when your done. Good luck sweetheart, hope it helps.
Reply:Okay, you have the bamboo thing going on, so how about a grass-type mat for your floor. You can probably find one at a discount store, like maybe TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Target, Walmart, etc. Also check ebay.

The bamboo blind is easily decorated as well. You can make things stay on the blind by slipping things between the slats to hold them in place- I have metal iguanas and lizards, etc on mine in my salon.

If you don't have a headboard, you can buy awesome wooden bead curtains at Pier1. Hang them on the wall behind/above your bed.

Decorate away - and have fun.
Reply:To hide the carpet use black scatter rugs, add black picture frames and if at all possiable for your gothic theme black gauze curtins or any black curtins that are light weight. Use black light bulbs to create a mood when you just want to relax. Black medal canlesticks, accent pieces, curtin holds or furniture with black hardware. Paint can do wonders! You can find accents you like and paint them. If you can paint your furniture to match your gothic theme. Also don't forget the bedding if you can't get new bedding try hiding it by putting sheer curtins over it and accent pillows. It will look gothic then... for sheer curtins check the website below. Get them extra long if you want them to really flow or use as a bed covering. Measure across the bed and from head to foot. A scraf may work well for you. Try a metal headboard like a wall sculpure grill or even an old big picture frame painted black, staple some rice paper, fabric inside and hang it up on the wall. Or use more bamboo inside the frame, placemats work well for this.

    Good luck!

What kind of flowers are these?

the kind that is in anime and japanese films?

i think their called cherry blossoms but i'm thinking of the flowers that are all white that let go a million petal when they bloom.

What kind of flowers are these?
From your description, and without a good picture, I suspect that you are describing a species of Japanese cherry tree from the genus Prunus. Most ornimental Japanese cherry trees are from this genus and are quite beautiful while in bloom. Depending upon the species and/or variety, the petals may be white, pink, etc.

  • Any (sensible) ideas for a new colour for my bedroom walls?

    I have a light beech-coloured laminate floor,

My curtains and storage boxes are dark brown,

I also have some seagrass baskets,

My bedcovers are black and white flowers

I currently have light blue walls because I was going for the surfery look with my floors too, but I have a lot of gothicy Victoriany burlesquey items like dressing table and mirrors.

I was thinking a deep purple, any other suggestions?

Any (sensible) ideas for a new colour for my bedroom walls?
I always say....yawn...but true... go with lighter neutrals and accessorise to bring in colour, you can't go wrong with that and when you get bored you don't need to redecorate, just change accessories!
Reply:You could paint 2 walls the deep purple you talked about %26amp; the other two a lighter shade t contrast the darkness.
Reply:I think that would be a great colour
Reply:have you thought of green there are many shades that will suit this type of room.green goes well with black/brown/beech

purple sounds ok but may be a bit dark
Reply:Try a taupe with a hint of purple/lavendar. It helps keep the walls a more neutral color so that you can decorate how you like.
Reply:right now there is alot of brown and pale blue combinations in fabric, but you could go yo a paler shade of mauve not really purple, as it would not look good ,
Reply:Hmm....how about 2 walls dark purple and the other two lilac
Reply:deep purple would be best as a complimentary color to a lighter shade of purple...with dark brown, black %26amp; white %26amp; lighter floor a lighter color on walls would work best..using darker color for trims, accents.
Reply:purple on one wall maybe sounds nice the curtains being brown though maybe replace them if you are going purple.

i am having a bedroom colour and bathroom dilemma at moment i want to change my chest of drawer to white and have a white bed its the colour for walls i don't know lol
Reply:please use same as you floor. it will be look like very better
Reply:Dark dark red would look lovely with the dark boxes and the light floor would keep the room from appearing too dark.
Reply:if you want to sell it in future use neutral colour like off-white.

    otherwise deep purple is cool!

    anything but simply red lol
Reply:A nice deep red would be nice and it would go well with your black and white bed covers AND your gothicky stuff too! (lots of candels would also look nice)

Hope you find something you like soon!
Reply:as i read your question i was going to say purple as thats my fave colour but then i read the rest of the comment and thats what you came up with. Maybe a deep lilac?
Reply:Deep purple is going to "shrink" your room, so unless it's quite large, I'd advise against it even though I get the look you're going for. (It'll also take 3 coats of paint to cover in the future.)

Consider a greyish lavender or a rich medium blue like Copen, or a very pinkish raspberry red. All can be dramatic with pale floor and Victorian furnishings, and go well enough with your curtains, boxes, and bed linens.

(I'd go with the grey-lavender, myself.)
Reply:i like mint green, cream and browns togehter, choosing is all part of the fun x
Reply:deep purple sounds nice, mayb have that colour on your main wall then a lighter colour purple on the other 3
Reply:try pale mushroom mine looks great
Reply:I think duck egg blue would suit your bedroom, it's a very calming colour.
Reply:purple's good, but yeah, don't do all the walls really dark, it will make the room seem smaller too. i was gonna say some natural shade of olive-y green, but with the Victoriana stuff i'd say a more classic shade maybe, but then again you'd have the same problem with the light if it was too dark a shade. Also if you do go for purple, a bluey lilac-y shade might be quite nice, unless that's not enough of a change?
Reply:lol I was reading and thinking to say blue... then I got to the part saying they were already blue!

Blue is nice, though a cold colour it is also a thought provoking colour.

Deep purple is nice but think about how much darker your room will be with it, is this what you're aiming for?

Don't get any kind of yellow! it makes people angry apparently hah.

I say blue even if you already have it ;p

(added - our is the purple colour of KAY L's hat.. it's nice and not too darkening)
Reply:The Victorians loved deep rich colours so choose one wall in a striking deep rich colour - deep magenta or a red velvet. the other walls stick to a rich cream with a hint of yellow in it to compliment the beech floor and your other accessories.
    Reply:I would suggest something lighter...
Reply:A sage green would be really pretty! And the black and white with it would look stunning! Even the dressing tables would look fine with it.
Reply:You are requesting sensible answers and you are considering a deep purple!!! I would go the opposite with a pale color like light lavendar, pale celery grren, etc. Just my opinion.
Reply:pink would be nice i think

Clover plant, how should I care for it?

I bought 2 shamrock or clover plants at the grocery store. And like most grocery store plants, they have no tags to indentify the type of clover or how to care for it. It has only 3 leaves per shamrock and it has white flowers. Can anyone tell me what sort clover this is and what sort of light conditions this plant prefers and does it like alot of water or not so much. Thanks!

Clover plant, how should I care for it?
    It is not clover.

    It's an oxalis.

Thery like direct or indirect sun, and they like to be dry between waterings. They will die off if kept wet.

They shed leaves all year round, then put out new leaves and flowers.

Periodically they will shed all leaves and look dead, then revive.

    They do not like cold.

Need help redecorating my room...have a comforter in mind, orange blown up flower, some pink and white?

Isaac Mizrahi for Target? Pop Flower Bedding Collection

if anyone knows of this...its beautiful but i can't decide what paint color would work without it being too powerful...my room isnt that huge so i was thinking a calmer orange, peachy

    any ideas?

Need help redecorating my room...have a comforter in mind, orange blown up flower, some pink and white?
I would go with the lightest, maybe a "tint" of a color - often times the paint shades are shown in whites with a tint of a color - they are very light but you want the comforter to be the focal point in your room - also if it is a small room the light color is the best choice - if you have the patience, and want to have a theme I would even do the walls in stripes, but with green involved - think outside and flower gardens. and then go to loews or home depot and get the little white picket fences they sell and run that above the trim on your wall around the walls of your room. Cute!
Reply:the orange would be excellent and so would the hot pink. i would use white trim and accessories....
Reply:maybe you could paint pink and orange flowers along the wall and keep the background white! Or maybe even stripes in the three colors!
Reply:Sure... I have a few ideas. I don't think I'd go with more orange... Even if you use a calmer orange that leans towards peach, the orange in the comforter will make the peach look orange... And you'll draw attention away from the comforter and in a bedroom, the bed is the focus of the room so you want to make the eye roam to the bed.

Here are the 3 colors I suggest, in order of which I think would look best:

    1. A custard yellow with white trim

    2. A soft lime green with white trim

    3. A soft pastel pink with dark pink trim.

    Enjoy your new room!
Reply:You would have to be so careful with going another shade of orange, I would bring home lots of paint chips or take the comforter to the paint store to be sure. I personally would paint the walls the same colour of white as in the comforter, then use the other colours in the bedding as accent colours. Hope this gives you something to think about and have fun with it
Reply:paint ur walls hot pink because of the comforter.

I've grown several pepper plants, when are they supposed to produce fruit?

I'm fairly new to gardening, and this yr decided to have a go at growing my own veg, most of it died except for my pepper plants, they look really healthy. They stand about 10 inches tall and are deep green in colour. They have started producing white flowers, I didn't realise they flowered.

I keep them in a warm sunny spot on my kitchen window ledge, and keep the soil moist but not over moist. Please tell me if I'm doing anything wrong, they're my pride and joy, and really hope the give me some nice peppers.

(They are a mixed carribesn blend, if it matters.)

I've grown several pepper plants, when are they supposed to produce fruit?
Pepper is a tender, warm seasoned vegetable. Pepper plants reguire somewhat higher tempratures, grow more slowly and are smaller than most tomato plants.

Peppers are best started from seed indoors in late winter and then planted in the garden when the temprature is warmer in the spring. the plants cannot stand frost and do not grow well in wet, cold soil. When night tempratures are below 50 - 55f, the plants grow slowly, the leaves may turn yellow and flowers might drop off.

Peppers thrive in well drained soil that is kept moist but not wet. Use a starter fertiliser when planting, apply a general fertiliser when the first flush of peppers have set, and then weekly.

Fruits may be harvested at any size desired. Bell peppers however are usually picked when they are they are fully grown 3 to 4 inches long, firm . When fruits are mature they break away easily from the plants, however they are best cut to prevent damage to plants. The longer the fruits are left on the plant, the better the flavor. The new, coloured bell pepper fruits may be left on the plants to develop full flavor and ripen to red, yelloworange, or brown ; or they may be harvested green and immature. Some including,( white, yellow , lilac and purple ) are colours that develop in the immature fruit and that should be harvested before actually ripening, when they turn red.

Reply:to have fruit, the blossoms need to be pollinated.. if they are inside your house, they probably won't get pollinated.. bees usually do this..

Other than that.. sounds like you're doing fine.
Reply:just give it time it took me a year until they got big .
Reply:Are you growing them next to tomato plants if so move them far apart. It will take a while for the peppers to grow. Once they grow remove the peppers while they are still green. If a pepper plant has peppers on it that "ripen" turn red or purple or yellow then it thinks it has done it's job and will stop producing. Growing veggies in pots is harder than it looks. Tomatoes grow deep roots therefore need deep pots, things like parsley, thyme etc... need to be trimmed every now and then before they produce flowers because like peppers if they do that they think they have done thier job and will die back. Can you plant out side?
Reply:Peppers and aubergines take 5 - 6 months from seed to harvest. You've done really well to get them that size at this time of year! You can sow some more for later in the season as well.

White flowers will appear, and the fruits grow soon after the flowers wither. Feed theplants once a week and don't let them dry out. The fruits start off green, then ripen and turn red.
Reply:Tomatoes, aubergine, peppers are very similar in their habits, so leave the plant in this place so as the flowers are not disturbed, soon ( few weeks)you will see little peppers growing where the Flowers were. you may give the plant a little tomato feed. I have grown tomatoes but not peppers, good luck
Reply:Too early yet - the flowers will die off and the peppers will grow soon after - when all chance of frost has gone plant them outside (in pots if you want) in a sunny place. Just let them do their thing - they are quite hardy and can take a lot of sun shine - just give them plenty of water at late afternoon/early evening and a little again in the morning - they drink lots!
Reply:as the flower fades a tiny but perfectly formed pepper will emerge from the centre of the flower towards the end of summer, then just pick them as you need them and let the others grow on, the colour and flavour intensifies with time. each flower will become a fruit. give it plenty of light and warmt and dont drown it ,just moisten the soil
Reply:if them pepper plants ever have sex, then you will get some peppers
Reply:After they flower, they will set fruit. If flower drop occurs, then no fruit. Flower drop may occur due to stress, like, decreased water or cold temps at night. Be careful not to use to much nitrogen fertilizer as you will get plant growth with no fruit.

  • What can I do to keep my prom bouquet lookin' gorgeous, other than refridgerating them?

My prom was about a little over a week ago and my date got me this gorgeous bouquet of red roses and pink and white flowers. I really want to keep them for as long as possible without them getting ruined. I know they'll eventually dry up, but I would really appreciate any advice on how to preserve them for the longest time possible.

I have a Gourd plant growing since spring. How come I do not see any Gourds yet?

You would think that I should have Gourds by now? But no I don't. Why can some one please tell me? All I see are the white flowers. What s wrong with my Gourd plant? It has healthy , hudge leaves.

I have a Gourd plant growing since spring. How come I do not see any Gourds yet?
If you saw flowers on it,you would have a male and female flower to make it fertile,i;m quite sure I saw it in a garden book. I tried to grow a marrow once but no luck.
Reply:You should have planted two,as you need a male flower open the same time as the female flower is open to make a wee baby gourd, and with one plat you will find you have maybe female floer open one day then it close and then male flower open next day and so on son. with two palnts maybe male open on one and female on the other get it . Female flower is the one with the swelling behind the flower, just so ye know. Hope that helps you. sorry foe spelling i type fast and do do spell check.
Reply:It all depends on the season. I know that I had planted some pepper plants and some tomato plants, and had flowers, but no peppers or tomatoes. We have had really hot weather, and even though they had been watered plenty, I was told that they needed cooler nights so that the blossoms could bear fruit. Perhaps the weather wasn't right for your gourds this season. Try them again next year! That's the way with gardening. One year you have a bumper crop, and the next year you have little or nothing.
Reply:There's nothing wrong with the plant if you have flowers on it.

    Basically, herein starteth the lesson.

To polinate the flowers, yah need bees.

Bees live in gardens and other outdoorsey type places. If your plant is indoors, you will have to leave a window open so that the bees can fly in, get friendly with your flowers, take the pollen to other flowers and thereby polinate them. After all that.....the baby gourds will start to grow. Ain't nature wonderful?

Here endeth the lesson - happy gourds!

What did I do wrong with my half wild rose bush?

I had magnificant growth for two years. Last Nov. I cut it right back because it was taking over the whole garden. This year I only had roses on the bottom part. The upper part had small white flowers and tons of green growth. But no roses. Any ideas?

What did I do wrong with my half wild rose bush?
It was still probably in shock from the pruning. Roses don't like to be pruned that early, better to wait until January or February. Check with a local nursery and see when they recommend pruning in your area. Also, be sure and feed your rose! Good luck.
Reply:Be patient give it rose food, it sometimes take a season for it to recover from overpruning. Here is a link that may help: http://www.rosecare.com/

How do i know if my fruit tree will bear fruit this year?

I bought a Pluot tree approx 9 months ago and i think it was around 2 years old? (guess) and it is now about 1.5 meters tall, it had white flowers this year in spring and there is no visible fruit, i am not very educated in the fruit tree area, any help appreciated. thanks

How do i know if my fruit tree will bear fruit this year?
You will know as soon as you see flowers starting to grow followed by fruits.
Reply:Many fruit trees require two trees to pollinate (Male and Female)

Most fruit trees are pollinated by insects such as bees - carefully with insecticides.

Some do have both stamens and pistols on each flower but will not produce fruit if pollenated from one of it's own flowers.

Some trees are only male (Produces flowers with just Stamens) or Female (produces flowers with only Pistols)

Not sure which category these fall into.

    Good Luck.
Reply:You are correct in your assumption that having blooms usually yields fruit. However since your tree is so young, that might not be the case. Many trees require time to mature before they are able to start bearing fruit. Keep an eye on the blooms in the spring and sooner or later you will have fruit in the fall.
Reply:It's possible that the flowers were pollinated but didn't stick due to either a lack of nutrients, a late freeze, etc. It does require a pollinator (which means that another plant is required to pollinate the flower), so while it produced flowers they may not have been pollinated because there was only one tree. Consider getting another, or check and see if you neighbor is planning on putting one in.
Reply:Most fruit trees need to be between five and seven years old before they are mature enough to bear fruit. Have patience.

By the way, doyou know if it is actually a fruit-bearing plum,or a flowering plum, which blooms young but doesn't have fruit?

Help! Is there any spray to get rid of small black bugs?

The bugs are small, round, and black. They are coming out of the plant in my living room. It is a big plant that has small, white, flowers that have sticky stuff in them. I have had the plant for years and this is the first time I have noticed the bugs. Is there any spray to get rid of the bugs that seem to come out of the plant? Thanks in advance for all the help.

Help! Is there any spray to get rid of small black bugs?
Go to the grocery store - buy a bottle of "Apple Cider Vinegar" when you get it home put a cup of it in a low dish, near the plant. The bugs will go for it and drown. If you have a lot of them put two bowls or dishes of APC vinegar around the house. This works well.

White powdery smoke coming out of the ground?

I was planting some bulbs in my flower bed that is covered in mulch and as I moved the top layer of mulch a white powdery substance started to blow in the wind like smoke...I assume it is a type of fungus. Anyone know what I should do about it, if anything? Is it dangerous to our health?

White powdery smoke coming out of the ground?
You are right, it is a fungus. Not much you can do about it, as it is part of the process of composting. I don't know that I would want to breathe much of it, so just be careful.
Reply:sounds like limestone powder to me, is not a good idea to breathe.
Reply:not sure if it is harmfull to breath or not but it is a type of mold so i would suggest turning the soil and mix it up well. chances are the ground was wet for some time. I have fould this often when moving a thick dead weed bed in early spring. but seems to be fine once you stir it in...
Reply:sound like powdered lime stone. you must have got the wind to hit it. do you have land scapers maybe they added the lime to your garden
Reply:This was simply white powdery mildew which occurred because of wet mulch which was now dried out. Not poisonous or dangerous and there are organic ways to control it from getting on plants. Just check the web or any gardening group on BHG or HGTV etc.
Reply:it is heat from the compost it must be pretty hot

The are perfectly round and seem moist inside. I gathered them and am saving them in hopes that they are seeds and that I may be able to plant them. The jasmine is the climbing one with small white flowers. Are what I gathered seeds?

What do jasmine seeds look like?
It really depends on the jasmine. Each one has a different type of seed. I've seen them look like small, shriveled oranges to long, brown tubes. Chances are you have the seeds and will be able to plant them.

    Why do fushias change colour?

I was given a fushia last year that was flowering with dark pink flowers. I cut it back for winter and this year it has flowered with white flowers. I have not repotted or added any soil to the pot. Can anyone explain the colour change?

    Why do fushias change colour?
May be the problem is that you never repotted it.

Some colours need certain minerals in the soil which may be exhausted.

Another possibility is that you cut back to hard, into the rootstock of a plant that was grafted, so now you get the flowers of the rootstock.
    Reply:coz iit can
Reply:The colour pigment reacts to the pH value of the soil (acid/ alkili). Before it was given to you, it would have been in acidic soil, but yours is probably quite neutral.
Reply:Just a comment in passing: the fuchsia is named after a German botanist called Leonard Fuchs. I find that remembering this helps me spell it!
Reply:they revert back to their original colors,a lot are grafted to make all these new colors but they then revert back to their narural color

  • What is this type of wine or champagne?

ok the bottle is black and the wrapper around the lid is gold.it has like white flowers engraved in the bottle(they sort of look like dogwood flowers) they wrap around the bottle like a vine.I have seen it alot on tv (like on the nanny, and it looks expensive) I would really like to know the name of it and maybe where i could find it at.

What is this type of wine or champagne?
I know that Perrier Jouet Fleur de Champagne is in a green bottle with a gold top and has flowers on it and I believe they have made special editions on black bottles that were engraved.

It costs around $100 a bottle and most upscale liquor stores or wine shops will either carry it or be able to order it for you. Depending on where you are (and your age) you can order it on line from a number of internet wine shops. Some states do not allow alcohol to be sent from other states (archaic law)

    Try www.dotcomwines.com

They carry 4 Perrier jouet selections and you can call them to ask questions or ask them to order something specific
Reply:Sounds like Cristale. You can get it at a high end liquor store.
Reply:It is a chanpagne, but it is not all that good, as I felt more effort went onto the bottle than into the bottle
Reply:http://www.bevmo.com/productinfo.asp?sku... Is this it? The bottle doesn't appear quite so green in person, but I think this is what you are talking about. As mentioned, it's Perrier Jouet - a French Champagne. It's about $100 a bottle, but you can find better bubbly for cheaper (Schramsberg J Schram for starters). The Fleur bottle is gorgeous and it's a fun 'treat' for yourself. : )
Reply:perrier-jouet. it's beautiful, both the wine and the bottle. the flowers are actually hand painted. the best vintage recent vintage is 1996, try to get your hands on one of those. it comes in a beautiful box with 2 hand-painted champagne flutes as well.

as far as where to find it, that's a tough one. your best bet might be to contact perrier-jouet and ask for a list of U.S. distributors. www.perrier-jouet.com.

    enjoy!
    Reply:Perrier-Jouet, Fleur de Champagne

Very nice champagne from France. Check with a local wine store for availability. If you are willing to buy a case or two, they'll gladly order it in if they don't regularly stock it. However, if you live in a major enough city, chances are better than none that at least one wine store in your area will carry it. It is a bit on the expensive side but well worth it.
    Reply:Perrier-Jouet, Fleur de Champagne

The bottle is typically green, though.

It is an expensive bottle (depending on year), and usually retails around $100. It can be found at any good wine store or liquor store, usually on a top shelf or locked up.

    Cheers!

Why is my tomato plant not producing?

My Early Girl Tomato plant is huge (miracle grow), with lots of little, white flowers. I thought flowers meant upcoming tomatoes, but they just bloom and die. The stem and leaves look healthy. Some birds just made a nest near the plant, could they be the culprits?

Why is my tomato plant not producing?
try fis emulsion instead of miracle grow tomatoes you may be over feeding stop for a while check bottoms of leaves for rust or bugs DO NOT OVER WATER good luck thre are also small projections between branches called suckers these MUST be removed

I bought a plant called lipstick fragaria?

I bought this plant last year at the end of the season. I did some research and I believe it's a strawberry plant? It bloomed white flowers though. It has runners just like a strawberry plant would, it's low growing. My question is - is this really an edible plant if it berries? I looked everywhere on the internet.

I bought a plant called lipstick fragaria?
Fragaria 'Lipstick' is supposed to be a rose-red flower but it will revert back and throw a white flower every now and then, so this is not completely uncommon. I work at a nursery and see this happen in our crop. In a batch of 500 or so plants, perhaps 1 or 2 plants will come up white. So, you probably still have the ornamental type and the berries will not be very tasty and generally they are small.

If you don't like the white one, take it out and try it again (hopefully when in flower). The white one is nothing special but 'Lipstick' is really cute.

    Good luck.
Reply:Strawberries (Fragaria) come in both ornamental and cropping varieties.

Even if your ornamental variety does fruit they won't be as good as strawberries that are bred for eating.

I found a site (North Creek Nurseries) that lists Fragaria 'Lipstick" and say it is inadvisable to eat the berries, so don't but It also says your plant has pink flowers. Perhaps your plant is an eating strawberry after all and not the variety listed. If in doubt don't eat any just in case.

Does anyone have any tips on finding wild american ginseng?

I'd like to go out into the forest and look for some (once the snow melts) but everytime I go look for it I never find any. I look for red berries in like fall and the white flowers too. I live on a mountain with a lot of forest. I live in upstate new york also.

Does anyone have any tips on finding wild american ginseng?
patience, google it and you will get pictures, also older more mature woods, it likes rocky soil, but hates a high acid soil , it doesnt like a high oak tree count so find woods with other hardwoods in it, you should also find your state regs on hunting it, in ohio you cant harvest until september, it it also can be a federal offense if harvested out of season
Reply:You have to know what the leaves look like.
Reply:yeah, they're hard to find..me and my father tried so hard for so many days to find some, up high in the moutains and through the jungles and forests, for days we searched and searched,,until we finally gave up and drove to the farmers market and bought some

Is there a plant that looks like star jasmine, but does not bloom?

I have a large plant in my back yard that spreads over much of the ground. It looks just like my mom's star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides for you gardners and botanists), but I have yet to see it bloom. Like star jasmine, it also oozes a milky, somewhat sticky fluid when I pick a piece off of the plant. Could this be some other kind of plant that will never produce those sweet-smelling, white flowers?

Is there a plant that looks like star jasmine, but does not bloom?
Could it bee in too much shade? That will often reduce the flowering, but still gives lovely foliage. OR maybe it is what is commonly called "Asian Star Jasmine" but sorry, the Bot name escapes me but family is same. It flowers less heavily, and again shade could be retarding blooms. Try a couple doses of a Flower food, or good ole Miracle-Gro.
Reply:sounds like some kind of ground cover, sorry but star jasmine are vines, i dont know what you have.
Reply:At first I thought Wax Leaf Privet. But you said that in grows on the ground. May be it is Star Jasmine but it isn't getting enough sunlight to blossom. Or maybe you just need to fertilize with some flowering plant specific fertilizer.

my flowers always die,im just not good with them. :(

My white roses are dying plzz help :(?
you need to make sure the hole was deep enough for the roses, then did you put new fresh dirt on top of it? And don't forget to mulch the rose bush ! Could be that you have a fungus on the roses . Go to home depot and get some fungus rid for the roses. If you just planted them this year they will establish this year and be better next year when they bloom

What is the difference between incomplete dominance inheritance and codominance inheritance?

when a red flower is polinated with a white flower, pink flowers result. it is an example of incomplete dominance, but i think it is kind of codominance inheritance because pink is the result of red plus white. what is the mechanism in resulting in pink flower? I mean the mechanism connecting with enzymes and metabolism.

What is the difference between incomplete dominance inheritance and codominance inheritance?
it is incomplete dominance. the red flower is dominatnt and the white flower is recessive. however, the white flower is still expressing itself slightly, which means it isn't COMPLETEY recessive (the red flower is then incompletely dominant)
Reply:you are right that the red and white flower making a pink one is incomplete but codominance is a simple one or the other you are thinking of the ancient approach (blending) for example if i had a red flower and mixed it with a white flower (red is dominant) the result will be all heterozygous red flowers (if you do a punett square all the F1 generation [offspring] would be heterozygous [Ff])

    Good Luck!!
Reply:It would be an example of incomplete dominance because crossing the red and white flowers brought about a pink flower. Here, both the red allele and the white allele are expressed, but not fully--or rather incompletely.

An example of codominance would be if you crossed a red and white flower which resulted in a red flower with white dots all over it (or vice versa). Here, both red and white traits are expressed at the same time--or rather codominantly.

Are there any trees that can be confused with crape myrtles?

I believe I have a crape myrtle (Acoma...white flowers) in my front yard, but I'm not positive. I have been looking at pictures of crape myrtles on the internet, but they don't look like my tree. The leaves and flowers seem to be the same, but the tree itself doesn't look like the ones in the pictures. I think that might be because I've never pruned the tree before. It's about 6-7 feet tall, and my leaves and flowers don't grow only at the top (like the pics), they are all over the place.

Anyway, I want to trim some of the lower branches from covering my shrubs. So, before I prune it to look like the pictures (not the whacked off ones), I was just curious as to whether or not there are any trees that could be confused with a crape myrtle. I read on one website where someone confused their dogwood for a crape myrtle, so I looked up dogwood...and it's definitely not a dogwood.

    Thanks!

Are there any trees that can be confused with crape myrtles?
There *are* many plants that can be confused with Crepe myrtle, so I can't possibly identify them, but...not as many that can be confused by the flower, if you look closely. Also, crepe myrtles have distinctive bark, which can help to ID them.

Plants and trees are most reliably identified by their flowers (shape, not color), so if the flowers are identical, chances are that it is a crepe myrtle. Botanists used to identify and classify plants solely by flower structure (before genetic testing) because it is such a good indicator of a plant's identity. So--if you want a sure ID, look very closely at the flowers on your plant and compare them to closeup flowers on the net.

There are many horticultural varieties that can alter the shape of a plant. For instance, there are dwarf varieties, compact varieties, etc. Also, crepe myrtle grows very differently in different environments. In Texas, I once saw very narrow, thin ones growing up against the side of a building--almost two stories tall. In southern Maryland, I saw very large, thick, bushy ones. In Pennsylvania where it is cold, they will only grow as small bushes, low to the ground.

Pruning can also affect them. My advice about pruning though is that you should not prune plants unless it's an absolute necessity. But if the plant is crowding out other plants though, you can cut off a few of the lower branches to allow other plants room to grow.

I hope this helps! It's hard to give you an exact answer without seeing your plant!
Reply:msmissy, your comment was helpful as well. They do look similar, (from the pics I looked at), but thanks to the up close pics of the flowers, I was able to determine that it's not a lilac.

    Thanks! Report It
    Reply:It might be a lilac.

Does it bloom in spring or summer?

Lilacs bloom in spring and Crape myrtles bloom in summer.

The blooms on a lilac look a whole lot like a crape myrtle.

Suggestions of flowers for my upcoming wedding?

I am getting married in March 08. The colors that we have decided to use in our wedding are Pool Blue (as shown in David's Bridal), black, silver, and white. However, I am unsure of what flowers would appropriately coordinate with my color scheme. I need to decide on flowers to use in centerpieces as well as bouquets. Any suggestions?

Suggestions of flowers for my upcoming wedding?
All white flowers can look really pretty. Roses, lillies, hydrangeas, carnations, mums, daisies, tulips, snap dragons...there are so many choices for white flowers! You can use different flowers in one color to add texture to arrangements.
    Reply:Here are a few options:

You can have light blue hydrangeas:

    http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h...

    Light blue delphinium (beautiful):

    http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h...

    White stephanotis:

Navona lilies (had these at my wedding, gorgeous):

    http://www.thelilygarden.com/images_lili...

    White roses:

    http://www.justourpictures.com/roses/pop...

For a litte additional color since you shouldnt have too many variations of only two colors, there are these very pale pink peonies, soooo nice:

    http://thehotpotato.files.wordpress.com/...

Or also a pale pink tulip:

    http://z.about.com/d/pittsburgh/1/7/W/9/...

Or if you want a brighter color contrast (and this would look AMAZING with the black and silver highlights) you can have some pink dendrobium (aka orchids):

    http://houseonahill.net/flowers/wp-conte...

And if the brightness doesn't suit you, a white orchid would look nice as well and would stick out some beyond the other flowers and look quite nice:

If you want to go very simple yet elegant for centerpieces, theres this:

    http://www.fantasticweddingdeals.com/Blu...

Anyway, I hope I helped :) My wedding colors were bright reds and purples (like jewel tones) and while those were the primary colors, my florist did an amazing job adding a few other colors here and there for some depth like some golden yellow (which i didnt think id like but he knew what he was doing!) and some hot pinks, etc. Just saying this cause you have a very beautiful palette for your wedding but you might be limited in flowers if you only look for white and blue ones. If thats what you want then thats ok too because you can still make beautiful arrangements with those two colors but added a little pink or purple here and there might be pretty nice too. Anyway, I hope I've helped! Good luck and congrats!!! :)
Reply:Blue and white Tulipans, I think is the best option. Very elegant.

the color black can be applied subtly on the table such as maybe a black underlay
Reply:Try to stay with a variety of white flowers as much as possible. A nice creamy yellow would be a nice contrast, but just use it sparingly. Unfortunately there aren't many flowers in the silver/black area. You could also insert sprigs of rhinestones to add some interest.
    Reply:Hi and congratulations!

I like your color choices. I like the pool blue of the bridesmaids dress. I am assuming you will wear white and the guys are wearing a black tux with silver vest/ties? That is where the 4 colors come in?

My first suggestion for flowers is to look through bridal magazines and online for ideas. Take your ideas and go and meet with a florist. You can look through their books of previous weddings to get even more ideas and they can give you ideas too! That is their business! Give them a budget and they can work within your budget.

What I would suggest is a little different than what others have suggested. I would not go with a white flower or a pale blue for the girls....that would be too dull and would not stand out in pictures. You want something vibrant, but also something that will look nice against the pool blue dresses.

I would suggest something with blue in it...but not total blue...like this:

    http://weddings.theknot.com/gallery/gall...

OR...somehing with a little purple in it like this:

    http://weddings.theknot.com/gallery/gall...

This one would look nice for you:

    http://weddings.theknot.com/gallery/gall...

For the centerpieces...I agree with the other poster who posted a picture of a vase with blue hydrangeas. That would look real nice possibly on a mirror and then with some votives next to it.

Good luck and I hope I have given you some ideas.
Reply:I love the pool blue from David's it is one of my choices. I love orange so I was going to use orange flowers and peach against the pool, very pretty together. My tables at reception-we are doing a destination wedding-will be bud vases that will go in the center of the table with orange flowers, serving as centerpieces and favors all in one. Throw in some white flowers, maybe daisies. Good luck!
Reply:1. look through pics of bouquets on the knot and other sites and in magazines to get a feel for what you like - what kinds of flowers, what colors, size, shape, how big, lots of color or simple, lots of different flowers of just one or two, etc.

    2. take a pic of your dress, pic of the bridesmaids dress, a swatch of your color and pics of any bouquets you found that you like to a florist. share your ideas, see what your florist recommends (and get a price quote) to see what you both think will look nice and fit in your budget.

trust your florist, they are the professional after all.

The most basic method would be talking two pictures, one b%26amp;w and one color, use the lasso tool to cut out the object you want colorized, and then paste over the b%26amp;w image.

Then you want touch it up, make erasures, smoothen it out, etc.
Reply:Thanks for the info! I actually found an easier way to do this. You duplicate the image, change the color effects to black and white, then use the eraser tool to erase the black and white on the color you want. This will allow for the background image to show. Pretty easy! Report It

Unknown Plant With Fruit and Flowers Growing in Shade - Please Help Identify?

This plant/tree has been growing under my trampoline for a few months. At first all the fruit was green and there were no flowers. Now the fruit is turning yellow and there are tiny white flowers with yellow centers.

Some people have already suggested guava, kiwi, and coffee. I don't think it's any of those, though. Another person thought it may be in the moraceae family, but I don't think that's the case either. It seems too peppery and tropical.

It's most definitely not a Brazilian pepper tree. I've had many of those, and this is extremely different.

I'm already here in California.. and we also have that in our backyard..

the weird thing is that it turns yellow here as it grows.. but in the Philippines it stays green..

you could make it as a juice (if you're not too lazy to squeeze about 15 to 20 of those just to make a glass).. but you have to add water and sugar.. and lots of ice.. it's good to drink specially on hot summer days.. it's really refreshing..

In the Philippines we also use it to put in our meals. I would love to tell you what they are but you might not be familiar with them.

If you have Filipino friends or if you just know anybody from the Philippines.. show them that fruit and they will tell you the same thing that I just said.

k.. that should answer your question.. =)

What color curtains would you use to go with a set of Chinese brocade slip covers for a sofa?

I have found fabric which I really like in a fuchsia color with white flowers, and the same fabric design in white-on-white for cushions to go with it. I really don't want to make curtains of the same white fabric because it is a little expensive.

I am wishing for something colorful for the living room and am thinking of a forget-me-not blue rug ..... I don't think I can have another strong color, but I can't figure out what sort of fabric to use for the curtains that would be suitable to go with the brocade.

Have you any ideas? Not too expensive .... I keep wishing for some inexpensive cotton ... even a bleached muslin but that is too far down the scale ...... maybe a white polished cotton?????

I have never put such colors together before. I feel very daring.

What color curtains would you use to go with a set of Chinese brocade slip covers for a sofa?
    Hi peace and love,

It really depends on the colour of your walls-

if you have a soft off white walls i would go for heavy polished fushia cotton curtains with a border trim of the fushia and white and then use a white sheer underneath. the layering and borders is a good strong look. alternatively you could go for a fushia or pale lilac wall shade with heavy white textured curtains and a trim of the fabric you have with the flowers on the curtains - preferably in a silk for a contrast.

    enjoy decorating!

    Larissa
Reply:You did not say what clour your walls were,as it is best not to have too many colours in a room, iwould suggest you just stick to 3.Therefore i personnally go for very pale curtains in a off white,in a cotton or a none shinely satin, this would allow light in to the room, the rug sounds good so if you were to use pale colours you could then have tie backs for the curtains in either the fuchsia or the colour of the rug.
Reply:ditch the forget me knot rug, go with turquoise and gold, which will keep the exotic and striking theme . The forget me knot rug will clash
Reply:Black goes great with almost anything especially multicolors.

Or, you can go with a sea green, kelly green, slate blue, or gray.

    Experiment! Have fun..
Reply:If you have fuschia and blue, I'd bring in a soft green to balance the color palatte. You could look for a drapery print in either a stripe or a print that would be subtle and bring all of your colors together. Joann Fabrics has nice flat folds of discontinued drapery fabrics for $3-5/yard that are really nice. You might check them first and go from there to the Waverly or other pricier prints.

we pay for a lawn service to treat our yard once a year for weeds and dandelions. it cost $30 and i don't have to walk around the yard individually spraying those things every day. so much easier. and we only have them do the front yard where people can see. i know it's not a home remedy, but it's cheap and doesn't take time.
Reply:My dad douses the yard in gasoline.... but I think it's so he doesn't have to mow lol. Don't try that.

My grandmom used to take the left over juice from dill pickles and pour it on weeds and they'd be gone the next day. It's safe to use in flower beds too.

I have been growing sweet basil at home. How do I care for it?

I know you have to pluck the little white flowers that grow, but can you just cut the stem where they are growing? Or is just plucking better? I want more bushy basil. Cutting the stem seems easier because those flowers grow so fast! Help!!!

I have been growing sweet basil at home. How do I care for it?
you have to do more than pinch off the flowers...you should cut down lower into the stem - if the flowers are growing your plant thinks it is time to turn to seed.

pinch down a little lower in the plant to cause more vigourous growth.

make sure it gets enough sunlight water and fertelizer.

You should let a couple of the plants turn to seed and replant the seeds as well - this way you will have your basil continue to grow.

    good luck to you
Reply:Fertilize weekly during the growing season and pinch off all flower heads to prevent from going to seed.
    Reply:Hi:

Basil is a great herb to grow at home. It grows well in full sun and water it regularly. Cut the flower near the base of the leaves and dry the flowers for an arrangement. Cut the flowers at an angle, as this will promote new growth and a fuller plant. I hope this has helped some and if you have any more questions on basil or any other plant need, please feel free to contact me at my website. Take a look in landscape articles and read about growing herbs from seeds as well as drying them. Best of luck to you and let us know how your basil grows.

How do i get mold(white) out of my flower pot?

    B"H

If the mold is in the dirt, it will spread to the next pot, and you're just going to be stuck with it.

If you'd like to try, however, transplant your plant (very carefully - they hate this), scrub down the pot as well as you can (pretend you want to use it for food), and then boil it for an hour.

After boiling the heck out of your pot, put it somewhere it will dry thouroughly and quickly (like a heater).

With all the trouble, though, you're better off just buying a new pot.

If you're having a lot of troouble with mold, you may be over watering your plants. Careful; overwatering a seedling can cause it to rot. Try getting one of those clay worms that changes color to let you know when you need to water.

Couldn't have said it better, very thourough answer. Report It
Reply:If this is a white crusty substance on the surface of an unglazed pot, it is probably not mold. This is common on unglazed pots and is coming from either the soil in the pot or from the clay used to make the pot itself. It sounds like "efflorescense" which is the leaching of salts our of the soil or the pot. If it is inside the pot it is probably

from the soil. If it is on the outside of the pot, it is probably from the clay used to make the pot. Every time you water the plant, you dissolve a little bit of salt which crystalizes on the surface of the pot when it dries out. A weak solution of muratic acid and a stiff brush will clean it up. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning. You can buy muratic acid in any hardware store.

This can be a real problem on some brick homes. Have you ever seen a brick home that looked like there was streaks of whitewash on it. It is the same thing. It is cleaned the same way.

    Good luck.

I have a flowering white bush with long branches on it. does anyone know the name of it?

If this is what it is it is extrememly poisonous to pets and humans.

Lots of bushes meet this description. Try bridal wreath. If the branches grow long and almost touch the ground, and the flower blusters look like little bouquets, it is probably bridal wreath, a type of spirea. It could also be flowering almond.
Reply:Not knowing your climate or growing zone presents a problem.
Reply:It might be a spirea. You can find pictures at these sites.

Is it ok to wear a white dress with some brown desings all over it to a wedding?

I have a a white mid length dress with brown flowers all over it and was wondering if its appropriate?

Is it ok to wear a white dress with some brown desings all over it to a wedding?
I'm thinking you might want to look for another dress just to be safe. I know it's got the design and all, but you just never know if that will tick off the bride or her mom or whoever since the main color is white. People can be really sensitive these days. Heaven forbid we should offend anyone...
Reply:Don't wear white to a wedding, even if it does have brown designs. Just find something else, or the bride's gonna be upset ...and probably some of her family too.
    Reply:It's appropriate.
Reply:No I think off white will look nicer. That's the traditionally color after all. Try to stay away from other colors.
Reply:i think only the bride should wear white. its her day not yours. find another dress to be on the safe side. you dont want to upset her on her day do you?
Reply:Wear whatever you want as long as it isn't a wedding dress that outshines the bride on her day. Besides the attention will not be on you. The length of the dress is more important anyway. Never wear anything above the knee.
