White powdery smoke coming out of the ground?

I was planting some bulbs in my flower bed that is covered in mulch and as I moved the top layer of mulch a white powdery substance started to blow in the wind like smoke...I assume it is a type of fungus. Anyone know what I should do about it, if anything? Is it dangerous to our health?

White powdery smoke coming out of the ground?
You are right, it is a fungus. Not much you can do about it, as it is part of the process of composting. I don't know that I would want to breathe much of it, so just be careful.
Reply:sounds like limestone powder to me, is not a good idea to breathe.
Reply:not sure if it is harmfull to breath or not but it is a type of mold so i would suggest turning the soil and mix it up well. chances are the ground was wet for some time. I have fould this often when moving a thick dead weed bed in early spring. but seems to be fine once you stir it in...
Reply:sound like powdered lime stone. you must have got the wind to hit it. do you have land scapers maybe they added the lime to your garden
Reply:This was simply white powdery mildew which occurred because of wet mulch which was now dried out. Not poisonous or dangerous and there are organic ways to control it from getting on plants. Just check the web or any gardening group on BHG or HGTV etc.
Reply:it is heat from the compost it must be pretty hot

good stuff
