How do people change black and white photos with just one thing in color?

Ive seen this in photos of say

a child holding a flower and the child and background is in black and white but the flower is its natural color. Anyone know how to do this? or what program they use?

How do people change black and white photos with just one thing in color?
A little more detail HOW TO...

As you learn Photoshop, you will learn to use "layers". This is the major operation you need to understand.

Imagine your image as a stack of transparent layers and shows what is on that layer.

If you make 2 layers of your picture you will have 2 color copies of that image. You need to turn the top one to B%26amp;W or "desaturate" it.

Now all you see is a grayscale image, but remember, there is a color one under it. If you could erase the gray over the areas on the top layer you want color, the color of the image underneath would show thru.

use a fine point eraser on the top layer around the areas you want color, it is best to zoom in on the area to the color. After you use the fine point to outline all the color areas, increase the size of the point so you can paint out the rest of the grey inside the area you have outlined.

Thats really all there is to ir. There are more precise ways to do it but you are too much of novice to comprehend... you need more experience with you software.

Reply:they most likely use photoshop -

they probably get the same picture twice, make one black and white, and leave the other colour. then use the magic wand tool (or something else) to select the thing they want to keep colour and copy paste into the black and white picture. ive never done it before but i do use photoshop a lot to manipulate photos!
Reply:The program that I use to do this process would be Photoshop. I have used Photoshop 7.0, CS2 and CS3 of Photoshop can do this.

They call it Color Isolation.

The most easiest tutorial that I have ever used to help get the ball rolling was

The second link I found to be the best when first starting out.

Reply:You need a graphics editing program.

The best choice would be Adobe Photoshop, but this is expensive. You can buy Adobe Elements which has the main features of Photoshop.

All you need is a program which has an advanced selection tool and inwhich you can adjust the colour/hue/saturation.

If you are new to graphics editing, this may sound complicated, but it is one of the easiest parts of graphics editing and can easily be done by finding tutorials off the internet.

Try searching for freeware graphics editing software, or downloading trials.

I think you can get a trial for Adobe Photoshop and Paintshop Pro.
Reply:You do this in photoshop. You would carefully select the thing that you want to remain in colour with the polylasso tool/magic wand tool/quick selection tool/rectangal tool (any one of these will do, some will suit other things better) and then select inverse. It will select everything other than the thing you selected. Then you 'desaturate'. This will give you the effect you're looking for. I don't think anything other than photoshop can do this. Maybe paint shop pro, but I'm not sure.

Good luck!
Reply:Photoshop
Reply:there are many such photo editors....try picasa for starters
