i know he crushes the flower, but why and what does that symbolize?

I can't remember. It's been YEARS since I've read that book. I didn't know that they still made people read that book. Look at the way it is in the text. What circumstances surround the crushing of the flower. Symbolism is different for everyone so make it your own. If a teacher disagrees then ask why. See what they are looking for, assuming this is for school. Definitely read the book, don't use the cliff notes. Then you can be part of the few that get through that incredibly long book. You almost have to read it with a dictionary. LOL

Usually flowers, especially white flowers symbolize purity, kindness, etc... Destruction of a white object usually symbolizes the loss of innocence or the beginning of a turn for the worst.
