Hi, I have 2 white stone looking urns (they made with fiberglass) I'd love to put outside with something. so here's questions
1, basket of flower or pot of evergreen which looks good?
2, can I put whole basket/pot in urn? if so do I have to make holes at the bottome so H2o will drain?
3, if it's not working, do I have to put earth in whole urn?
is any good tips for using them please!! thank you
White urn. flower or evergreen?
I would mix ivy with flowering plants, very much as you would plant a hanging basket. If the urns are to be outside, you may need to make a drainage hole at the bottom so that they don't get waterlogged. You can fill the bottom half (approximately) with vermiculite or polystyrene if you want to make them lighter to move about. You will only need about four or five inches of soil.

Reply:I would suggest evergreen....... simple, elegant, lasts all year.
you can place rocks as a bottom layer, hopefully there's a drainage hole in the bottom of the urns, and then fill with soil %26amp; plant the bushes.
Reply:you can place it directly into the urn without drainage holes if there is room and your plant will not be sitting in drainage water. This could cause rot. If you like and you have the time you can also place some drainage holes in bottom so you do not have to dump out any water built up from watering the plant. If the weather is humid and during the winter months you may have to dump the water often to avoid water from building up in your urn. So with that said...
I personally would take the time, place four or five 1/8 " to 1/4" diam. holes in bottom add a layer of small pea size gravel first, then add some good soil (up to 6 inches below the lip of the urn), get this at any garden store, Home Depot, Long's, even some grocery stores. I would remove the plant moss and all and place right into the soil. This is going to save you from ever having to lift the urn and dump. Good luck to you and your plant. I would suggest green foliage plant and not flowers. Flowers tend to have one season or two when they do not look their best. Hot weather, cold frost ect. The green foilage will stay green and be more weather hardy if you choose the right one for your area. If you like the bright color of flowers, you can add some annuals and when they are not looking so great remove and begin again next season.
